Work Problem

Dunno if this is the right place to ask, maybe someone will be able to help me...

I started a job in IT in july taking over for someone that moved to another company. At a recent work night out he showed up asking the manager for his job back. My manager told me that he showed up asking and walked off without saying anything else the next day in work. Now today an email got sent around by the head of IT asking if anyone had his phone number...

Needless to say I'm a little worried. I gave up my spot at college for this job now the end of my probation is coming up in December. I'm fairly ****ed if I get laid off... I've done the job to the best of my ability, I'm on top of all my work so they haven't got a bad word to say about me.

Should I ask him what the story is, if I'll have a job in 2 months time? Would he even tell the truth? Head is melted... Been off the smokes 2 months now and managed to crack when I saw that email.

    Any advice would be great,
    Thanks...

I'd suggest going to talk to him about it, just explain that you're a bit worried about what's going to happen, especially as your probation is due up in a couple of months. I'd say check your contract, but unfortunately, a lot of probation contracts allow for employers to let you go with no reason entitled.

I'd say check out the forum in Biz>Personal>Work and Jobs for better advice though.

Well, if you're in work at the moment, I'd suggest you don't post on public forums!!

    (if you're at home...sorry!!)

just explain to your boss everything you've said here:

*you know this guy is back (after defecting to another firm)
*you gave up your college place for this job
*you are on top of your work with no complaints
*you are pretty screwed if you get laid off

you are still in probation period so i dont think you've got much of a leg to stand on, your pretty much at their mercy, sorry man.

First never panic, Your not f**ked. :)

It will be hard to get an honest answer from your boss.

So have a look at your contract if you have one?

Contact centizen infomation, the relevent union, look at your exact legal position. That way you can go down fighting.

If they do let you go, then you really don't want to work for a company that threats it staff like that, So they are probablely doing you a favour in the long run.

    Best of luck OP

Well, I would have to disagree with the comments made so far.

Firstly, what your manager has done is completely unprofessional and inappropriate. You've got to learn the politics of IT, and trust me, 95% of getting somewhere in IT is politics. Anyhow, I personally wouldn't say a word, keep doing the good job that you're doing and see what happens when the time comes...There is no point in seeking any legal advice or anything at this stage as it's completely premature. What I would do is keep a copy of e-mails and all correspondence regarding the matter, and, should it arise, dig it out.
Don't stress over it, and whatever you do, don't let it effect your good work you've been doing to date.
I hope that helps somewhat. Good Luck
