Been thinking about trying to do some copywriting on the side for a while now. I'm a freelance journalist, looking to make some extra cash, and it was suggested to me that there'd be some copywriting work available if I looked for it. Just wondering people's opinions on whether this is something that could be done on the side, whether there is work out there, how I'd go about getting some or whether this is just pie in the sky really when I don't have any sort of portfolio or experience at it. All opinions welcome. Cheers.

    Hi There,
There's always work for talented people that are creative and unique. If you do good work and deliver on time then people will talk about you and recommend you and your clients will grow. You can always do some free work for people to get your foot in the door and grow you experience, portfolio and name.

There are a number of freelance websites that you can join and start to get some work eg getafreelancer.com or elance.com but of course with a portfolio and experience would help,i don't think you should focus on it that much.Everybody has to start somewhere.

I also think a good idea would be for you to blog if your not or have'nt already.

I'd probably recommend getting yourself a blog and start writing there. Get into the public eye a bit. Mention on it that you are doing copy writing and as was said try getting a portfolio together.

Writing marketing copy would be very different to writing technical copy so without examples people won't know what you're capable of.
