Just to keep it going, there is still question of the cover. There were quite nice suggestions here, here, here, here and here.
And we also got permission from Boards.ie to use the name and logo..

So, feel free to discuss and create. Thank you all for suggestions!

By the way, the book will be 8x10 inches (portrait or landscape).

    First!

expanding on the 'self portrait' idea; what about doing the tiled self portraits, but using 'mirror shots' that I know *everyone* on here has done at one time or another! :pac:

That way you get the photographer, their camera, and a bit of badly needed cover for us shy types!

It could look quite cool too... basically a hundred lenses pointing out from the cover of the book

The thumbnail of self portraits seems like a good idea.

thumbnails soulds good...but to maybe expand on it a little...how bout use the thumbnails to make a photo mosaic on the boards logo

    chris_phone_mosaic.jpg

    click for bigger image

I would like something showing a camera to define who and what is represented in the publishing of the book also mention the raising funds for Santa

If going for the collection of thumbnails, does it have to be formed to look like something? Personally I think random thumbnails might be better.
Alt for me would be the boards logo on black (perhaps in white in the bottom-right corner - sorry, minimalist at work:o)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

The minimal black cover had got my vote, but the mirror self portrait idea might be good.

    Classy I like it

+1, I don't think my mug on the cover would sell many copies.....

    +1 also.

I don't want a pic of myself on it!!! I'm sure everyone else would look fine but I just wouldn't be comfortable with my face on it :/

    Lol!!!

I like Sheesh suggestion of a thumbnail of all the pics on the cover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

classy black would be good too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Black cover with maybe a small grey 'boards.ie' in the bottom left hand corner or something? Glossy with matt black logo would be lovely IMO but I don't know if its doable. +1 for minimalism here too!!

Although I do also like the idea of the random thumbnail mirror shots...

2 Quick attempts with the low resolution file.

    Normal
    boardscovercopy3534099zf3.jpg

    Minimal
    boardscoverminimal35885zg4.jpg

I didn't really know what the dimensions of the book were going to be, but
it could easily be adapted to landscape/portrait/square etc.

I purposely blurred it to reduce the pixalation of the low res file, the high
resolution originals can be used again and a proper logo made. :)

We would want to be very specific about SSF. IMO, the proceeds are going to Blurb, but we are making a donation to SSF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

    Shiny - I like what I see.
    The book will be 8x10".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Maybe "All profits donated to SFF" ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Nice shiny: 'Normal' one looks best to me

I edited your file, what do ye think, maybe PHOTOGRAPHY could be done with thumbnails !
Note: If ye don't like it, then no hard feelings.......I'm thick skinned !

I havent been reading all the posts and I'm not sure where to ask this but.. from what I can gather there's only 120 being made?

    Would you consider making more?

Maybe next year you could do 'best of' dublin or ireland and try sell it for charity? just a thought!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭kjt

I like the idea of mirror portraits, just over a hundred camera's looking out would look great. Either that or the black glossy cover with plain logo and "Random Thread Mark I - Offline edition" printed on it..

    Edit:

Oooh, I like! Or the opposite, matt black, perhaps in fabric, with an embossed glossy "Boards.ie" in the corner. I don't suppose the budget stretches to that though :(

Shiny, I prefer the 2nd (minimal) one of the two.

Re kjt's post about the "Random Photo Thread Mark 1 - Offline Edition", can that be put on the inside cover/title page maybe?

Can't do a mockup now (no dtp software in work) but I'll throw something together at home later.

Edit: Just saw kjt's edit there, now suddenly I like that idea!! Fickle...

I really like the b/w thumbnail mirror portrait idea (henceforth to be known as BWTMPI for brevity).

I'm sure some of our more design oriented talents here could do a good job incorporating these as the top 2/3 of the front and back covers and the bottom third a discreet title/ Boards logo and SSF recognition

    My 2c

Well, every participant has to buy one book. Books will be available on Blurb for re-orders. If you know, that you would like to buy more, just let us know. There is no limit how many books should be sold.

However that does not belong to this thread.

The "random thread mark 1 offline edition" gets my vote. Great idea :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

I think these are good ideas but the main things to include are the fact that is
    • boards .ie photography
    • santa strike force.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭dakar

Forgot to say +1 for soft cover.

While all this debate is healthy and lets us air ideas, I suppose getting a financial structure in place so that when people are subscribed, we can narrow it down to 2 or 3 polls (format, 2 or 3 cover art choices and hard or softback) poss in a temporary sub forum.

This could also house c&c threads for those of us who might (well will!) have trouble deciding which pic to put in. and maybe a bit of technical help on colour management, sharpening etc before commiting our efforts to eternity:)

I like this but, now shoot me down if you guys like, I think in the background of this could be a square with maybe an inch or even a half between it and the edge of the book either side, in the square would be the thumbnails of mirror shots all different coloured in an andy warhol style.

I'm heading out in a few minutes but if you dont know what i mean i might be able to do something quick when I come home.

I would prefer discussing pricing in thread Year Book - Money.
Intentions were to have this thread to discuss the cover and to post your suggestions so we could make a poll of your designs later :-)

A thought to keep in mind when designing a cover: this is a yearbook, after all, so it really ought to have "2008" somewhere in it. I can see future yearbooks happening...

i think that sounds like a very nice and classy idea, if i saw just a plain black book with only a small bit of writing i would be more inclined to look at it as it has that element of being slightly mysterious rather than if it had a big colourful logo on it. we could for example have sinead's idea on the front then on the front page have one of the mosaic or thumbnail ideas, and mention SSF also.

I really liked this idea but i agree with OscarBravo (i think) on the fact that it should have the "2008" somewhere. I'll try to do something quick this evening and submit my own version of it.

  • Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 28,830 Mod ✭✭✭✭oscarBravo

I've thrown together a couple of edits myself. Not as minimal anymore, but I guess that's a tradeoff. I thought the margin was a little narrow, but then I'm not exactly a graphic designer.

I prefer the first one. That's along the lines of what i'd thought so you saved me the hassle of doing myself :D

maybe it will give ye a few ideas anyway.

    Way too busy!

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

You obviously went to a lot of work doing it but its making me a bit dizzy looking at it. Maybe if it was darker...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

I like Oscar's first one too, but I'd bring the leading in on the 2008 and make the stroke thinner. I'd also make the images and the text a bit smaller. Looks really good though!

I'll throw something up in a bit, if the kids allow me to work...

Also - just to throw a complete spanner in the works - if there's a big split between minimalist and more graphic we could produce two? I really really love minimalist design, and tbh it would be a huge disappointment to have something fussy on the cover for me. This is just personal taste talking. Although I study design so I guess its educated personal taste...

Or we could have plain front cover and graphic first page?

Edit: Are the original files up anywhere? Those ones are too small to edit...

Cheers - I was going for a quick'n'dirty mockup; anything more fancy than that is beyond my skillz. Food for thought, if you will.
Or we could have plain front cover and graphic first page?
That was something I meant to suggest. I like the idea of a mosaic of mirror shots, but I think it would make the cover too busy.

    Yes Please!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Fionn

i actually didn't spend much time on it - just threw a few things on the page during Lunch time! I already had the Boards Logo done from a project a few years back in vector format so it was only just the background i threw on

and yeah I'd agree it's way too busy :)
maybe a graphic of a lens/camera as a background might be good as opposed to plain black or just plain. Minimal works too.
If i get a chance i'll have another go later on this evening.

I do think the Boards Logo, an indication of contents and the year should be included on the cover.

    :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Ok five minute low-res job. The font's not right but it'll give you an idea of what I meant...

    1.jpg

Orrrrrr..... how about something of a teaser cover, with details about Santa Strike force on the back?? This would be my preference:

    2.jpg

I know its almost empty, but with a book that's going to have so many graphical elements a bit of balance might be nice, and like I said with a graphic first page I think it would work well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭dakar

I really like option 2 sineadw, very cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,618 ✭✭✭Ideo

I really like number 2 too, but I'm not so sure about the boards.ie logo. I almost think 2008 on its own would be great!
