136 MB! And of course my internet chooses tonight to slow down. Oh well, if anyone notices any crazy bugs in the next 2 hours be sure to post them here and I can cancel the download :pac:

    321mb for me.
Wow - what do they put in these things?

Fortunately with Eircoms speed increase last month downloading it took less than 20 minutes.

Nothing negative so far and on the positive side graphical effects are noticeably smoother than they were.

321MB for me too. That's on a MBP Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz. Why does the update differ in size for different machines?

    136 for me. C2D 2GHz iMac.

New graphics drivers for Nvidia cards? (just a theory)

Strange, everyone else who's 312MB has Intel. I have G5 and it's 136 but you have Intel and it's the same ?!

32bit versus 64bit, I'm guessing that any 64bit binaries for C2D are bigger.

    *ahem* ... G5 is 64bit (only 136mb....heeeheee)

    PPC rulez!!!!!! :pac:

64 bit binaries won't necessarily be bigger - well any I build aren't.

See there's also an update to Front Row - thought they'd do the Apple TV-esque interface but they didn't.

Now I'm confused... the update was 136MB on my Core Duo Mac Mini but 321MB on my Core 2 Duo MBP... No idea what the difference was (the Front Row update was listed separately - the sizes above for were the Mac OS X update only). Go figure why they vary so much on two Intel Macs...

Safari has been wonky on the MBP since the update - has crashed me on at least twice on me but it might be unrelated...

iTunes has also informed me that my computer is no longer authorised to play my music. I had to re-authorise it, using up one of my 5 authorised computers. Then one song which I bought yesterday wouldn't sync to my iPod because apparently it still wasn't authorised to play that song.

So I double clicked on it and iTunes played it no problem. I hit sync again and it worked fine.

Weird. I don't know if this was related to the update but supposedly Apple did tweak iTunes 8 performance in 10.5.5. Maybe they tweaked it too hard? :P

There's an explanation of varying update sizes here:

Thanks - interesting stuff in there. It kind of makes sense too. My Mac Mini that has a pretty small amount of applications installed, got the smaller update whereas the MBP (with a ton of stuff on it) got the bigger one.

Hi, I was prompted to install 10.5.5 last night and did so, unfortunately my macbook froze on startup and never moved on, cursor arrow in top right corner and progress circle not moving.
I eventually restarted in but it gets stuck at the same screen each time.
I've used the start up disk and used Disk Utilty to repair both the disk and permissions, repairs made but no change to screen.
I've tried using the command prompt ala http://www.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t126850.html
But don't understand how or where I'm supposed to put in the -x -v -f on the reboot, I never get asked for such and putting them in on the terminal screen just get's an error

I love the macbook, much prefer it to a lifetime of windows but this is the first problem I've had and whereas I imagine I'd find more help online for windows, there doesn't seem to be the same online help for mac.

Has anyone elese had this problem or even if not, does anyone know how to get out of it, a bit depressed and tired with mac at the mo :-( ah sure maybe it was too nice to be true, I didn't even want an update, things were fine....

The insanelymac stuff is for those naughty people who install MacOS X on generic PC hardware and does not apply to real Macs. We're not allowed to discuss it here so please don't take it further. Suffice to say it doesn't refer to your problem.

I can't help you with your current problem but maybe with some more info the more intelligent users here can decipher the cause of your problems. There are key combinations which you can use to start in a kind of Safe Mode that may help you. After that you could try a time machine backup recovery ?

i was just about to say the same thing...... :P

    - zap your PRAM and see if that helps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US

    - for good measure zap your SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

    -boot

I would also just have a listen to the hard drive - is it making weird noises when it gets stuck?

If answer is no, and if Zen's safe-mode suggestion doesn't help, then it's time to re-install.

Thanks for all that and apols for mentioning that insane place, didn't realise what it was, just results from a google search on the symptoms.

The hard drive sounds healthy and will try those methods to start in safe mode to roll back a bit.

Won't be back at the mac for another day so will let you both know how I got on, but thanks in advance for your advice.

Anyone getting funny behaviour with sleeping (MBP)? Have noticed the screen brightness is down to zero when opening the lid. On one occasion, the hard drive didn't spin down. Got a nice gust of warm air when I opened my bag a few hours later!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

I haven't had any issues with sleep on my MBP and 10.5.5 - I leave it in sleep mode most of the time anyway, rather than shutting down. Do you have InsomniaX running? Maybe it didn't unload properly or something when you last enabled/disabled it?

Yeah,136 here too, (G4 PowerBook). Seems to take a little longer booting up since the install

Just to let you know, the zaps didn't make any difference :-( and because I'm not using time-capsule I couldn't turn back time when I got into safe mode. Did a re-install and it seems to be working as well as ever now. I never realised that a re-install could be done to keep al files and settings from the previous install intact, nice.

Currently downloading the 600mb combined update, hopefully it'll be a clean process this time.

    Thanks for the helpful suggestions.
