Good Second Bass?

Hey All,

I've been playing bass for about a year and a half now, and i was thinking of getting a new bass to move on to.
I currently have a Cort Action bass, which is pretty good.
I was thinking of keeping my budget 500 or under, but If there's something you really suggest that goes over a little, i'd think about it..
I heard somewhere that Low-budget Fender P's can be about $450, but i havn't seen any anywhere?

Oh, sorry.
I play, well, Rock, a little metal, And enjoy a bit of fast basslines, E.G. Flea. I do occasionally slap, but not a lot.
I was looking at the Greg Bennett Tabu Bass

Also, i think i want 4 strings, unless anyone can see any REALLY important reason i need 5?

My advice would be to save up a bit more so you can get a cracker of a bass. For €500 you wont get anything way better than the action 4 which is a very good bass itself. I played a yamaha rbx 270 for ages before I went and bought a rickenbacker 4003 and I've never regretted it.

My advice save up till you ot around 750 go second hand and you will get a bass thatl last you the rest of your life. Ive seen stingreys go for around that price second hand!

For the money you're talking, an Ibanez BTB would fit the bill, plus it's got the two octave neck you're looking for.

I've played Ibanez basses for the last 5 years - first had an SRX700 and now I'm using an SR1005. They're great basses, good for rock, funk, metal, pretty much anything. They all have good EQ's so you can dial in whatever sound you want even before it goes into your amp. Here's a few off thomann (in descending order of price) -

The bass you linked was over €600 so I figure you might be able to manage these pricewise, for the extra €200 up from your original budget you'll get a lot of sweet basses. As for the 5 string argument, it's really up to you. I play a 5 string now, which also has curved wings - it took a little bit of getting used to but now it's second nature to me, playing a flat bass feels weird as for sound, I use it to add a bit more low register to a song - it really stands out. Think of the riff from the Righteous and the Wicked, the low notes are open B strings, and it sounds great. Slapping and popping will be harder at first but like anything you get used to it. Oh, and all the basses I listed have 2 octaves, except for the Bacchus (alas )

Sorry for jumping in on your thread OP but jaysus mary and that guy that was with her, IBANEZ BTB670 - tasty tasty tasty but what is a flat bass? Is it as obvious as the bass having no contours or a traight neck or something?

Just means the finish is flat- i.e. not shiny.

No, that's not what I meant. That wouldn't affect my playing. The wings on the bass are curved. You may be able to see it in this pic - http://www.barattomusicale.com/adpics/4858df52d1bba1c17e0ec7177.jpg - if any of you have the Ibanez catalogue there's a great picture of the curved wings. Basically, looking down the neck from the bridge end of the bass, the A string is slightly higher than the 2 strings on either side - imagine the contours of a hill with the peak being the A string. What it meant was that when I first got the bass, I would reach for the G string and miss it because the curvature of the bass meant it was slightly lower than on a bass with no curves.

That's interesting. Whats the thinking behind it ? Takes a bit of getting used to I'd say.

To be honest I'm not sure at all. I once played a Warwick which had even more of a pronounced curvature and it felt horrible at the time (I was still playing my SRX700 then), but with mine at least I can say it definitely warms after time. Perhaps it's some sort of ergonomic design because it's only on the higher end models? As far as I can tell, anyway.
