this combo (satellite & terrestrial) HD receiver can be had for about €210 delivered - altho I've seen some crazy prices on some sites - which makes it fantastic value for money.

    does anyone have one?

Thats a great price (satworld.ie have it at €324!)

I shouldn't be asking (cos i've just ordered the clarketech 5000 combo at 270 delivered) but where are u seeing it at that price?

Also - did u have to get a dish/aerial installed? If so, can you tell us who you went with?

Its a great price no question, the trade price I buy at is more than 210. May I ask what site you saw this on?

I just googled for it and found Southern Satellite's ebay shop. It's a few pound dearer on their main site which is quite typical.

EDIT: "Best Value For Money HD Satellite and Freeview Receiver" implies combo, but the word combo isn't mentioned - the ones with combo mentioned are the same prices as the shop and are coming in at €258 which includes shipping.

Phibsboro - I didn't buy anything (yet) - I just keep an eye on the HD stuff every now and again as I plan to buy when it becomes cheap enough. This is getting there.

Looking at his shop, the £150 one is the ordinary one, the combo is £190. He's being a bit naughty and mixing in pics and some description of the combo with the ordinary one, but if u see a full list then its obvious which is which. There shouldn't be a "buy it now" price diff between an ebay shop and the individual items, the shop just lists those items grouped together. And there isn't a difference, the 150 listing is the ordinary one.

So 190 + 25 delivery = 215 = 270 euro according to google. Which is still not a bad price, but for the same price I'd go with the clarketech, PVR known to work, few heads on here have it (and have itv HD tuned in) and, imho, it looks better :D

how would you rate it vs the competition, eg technomate combo, clarke tech etc etc? or even vs non-combo models like darkbox and dm800?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Fat_Fingers

well, you cant really compare DM800 with the rest, DM is is Linux based system and can do much more then any of the other non-linux systems but at the same time its really enthusiasts system. If you don't know Linux well DM can be very frustrating and difficult system

Techomate would be the best of non-linux bunch when comes to quality, support and features.

Clarke is second one. Some people will say its even better then techomate , as its cheaper.

Darkbox has excellent hardware but VERY poor support; software is undeveloped and full of bugs. Definite no-no. I know, i have one.

A couple of questions fror those with experience of this MVision receiver:
Is it compatible with the current MPEG4 digital trial?
Is the conax slot onboard OK for using a Digitalb card or is a seperate CAM needed?
    ITVHD - yea or nay?

I have a SD MVision receiver for hispasat and a Humax HD Freesat for 28.2 but this seems interesting. And it might help my front room look less like an an electronics store.

Works for RTE DTT, separate cam AFAIK , there is also a card reader but not sure what it does.

    Thanks Tony :)

Snaps: LOL I could get replace a couple of the boxes with this and not have to get another for the DTT trial. Add on computer and stereo equipment and it's overkill.

I had to make a decision, either a love life or my gadgets......I took the gadget option!!!

I have everything set up now how i like it, I have a 1.1m dish in the garden on a motor, also a 75cm dish for fixed position 28east.

No moans and groans about the dishes, boxes under the TV's, cables (Even though they are all tidy now)

I have boxes of stuff i really need to shift out. Have dont know how many satellite recievers, dating back to a nokia 9200s. Everything works, dont know why i keep them to be honest.

Now, back to the topic of the MVision HD200...

I'm trying to remember what might have been deleted here :) But given that the topic is whether the HD 200 is the best value combo HD receiver at the mo and it then transpired that OP had misread the ebay listing, it is worth pointing out that you can in fact get the hd combo for very near the OP's price...

    http://www.satshop.tv/en/Digital-Receivers/MVision/MVision-HD200-Combo::843.html

Its €199 ex shipping. I didn't register to figure out charges but it looks like approx €20. So thats a great price for a high def combo box - I recently paid a €60 more for a clarketech model so I wish I'd seen the satshop listing first :D

There are pros and cons to ordering from abroad vs ordering from an Irish shop or online store. I got some of my gear for my recent install from tony at satellite.ie and I was very (very!) impressed with his customer service - there was an issue with the order as delivered and he was on the phone to me within minutes of receiving my mail and had a replacement on its way to me that day - I'm not sure I'd get that service elsewhere. But of course we are all price conscious and when the local shops get too out of whack with the main european sites, the price difference outweighs the hassle for those items. BTW, another advantage of local is you can go to pick it up yourself - satworld have a shop out in kimmage (though be aware that the shop doesn't honour the web prices which is a bit peculiar).

I think the local operators contribute a lot to this forum but hopefully that wouldn't stop us being able to discuss pricing on other sites.

    Cheers,
    C

Thats an excellent point, I guess you have to strike a balance between the two

May seem peculiar but bear in mind he is trying to cover the extra expense of running the shop and it costs less to admin orders via the website which is the major reason I do it this way. Mike at freesat does run a walk in shop though and hes delighted with how its working out so far so i may go down that road myself in the future.

It certainly should not stop anyone from discussing prices here. This particular thread made me realise that the deal I got from the wholesaler on the 200 was not competitive so threads like these are helpful in lowering domestic prices although I doubt we will ever fully compete on price with the EU sellers as they have a lower cost base. This will get even worse as we will have to swallow another .5% vat from December and raising prices is not an option I feel. Competition is good for everybody

Slight correction - I read it correctly - the listing was misleading, and to this day it might still have been the combo for that price, tho it is unlikely.

Irish retailers certainly are having the time of their lives trying to compete with Northern Ireland and the Internet - and some reference was made to that in the budget. Bottom line is that they must be competitive to survive as people should have, and will have, no qualms about getting themselves the best deal - regardless of where it is.

Sorry for off topic but was it not very strange to reference competition from Ni in the budget speech and then make it even harder by raising VAT ???

    Extremely hard!!!!!

Everything now is cheaper in the UK/North. Fuel as far as i know was the 1 thing that was no cheaper and that was one thing people from north of the border came south for. But as petrol was increased and with the current exchange rate for the 1st time in around 12 years petrol is now cheaper across the border. So the silly bugger has now lost the revenue created by drivers coming south, and drivers now from the south will be heading north now for fuel.

My cats could have delivered a better budget.

It was, and in addition he said that because of lost revenue from people shopping in NI he had to put up taxes. Helping/forcing retailers in the Republic to be competitive is what he should be doing.

Tony, I want to replace my dying Thompson HD box - what would you recommend?

I want to keep my sky hd sub, so I will need to use my sky card - I would also like max storage possible (have lots of kids programs that always need to be available if screaming starts!)

Any other extras I should be looking at?

To be honest i'm not the best person to ask as I've only ever used two models the thompson and the pace.
