Ok a few shots from my ramblings around Vienna at night (ok one was during the day but underground). Would love to hear your thoughts on the B&W conversion and recommendations for how you'd do them differently.

You are so lucky to get to see these differant places :)
ur shot look great in B&W #3 is so clean & sharp..

ln the word of Midge Ure (Ultavox)

We walked in the cold air -
Freezing breath on the window pain
    Lying waiting
A man in the dark in the picture frame
    So mystic and soulful.

    Oh,Vienna

I think #1 is the cream of the crop for me (pardon the pun) - it's really great. love the b/w conversion - almost like a scene from a movie.

In #2 - there are strong lines. when i first looked, i thought "horizon straightening" needed big time, but then i looked again and realised that it was actually the join of the two lines across the top of the hot dog stand. As the longer line of the two naturally falls away in the perspective of the image it kind of unbalances the image. Its a tradeoff i'd guess - maybe in composing the image a little less night sky giving a little more ground would have been beneficial - and balanced a little more (all in very small portions though).

#3 - i wouldn't be gone on. I know what the intention was but i think you've lost too much in the blacks/shadows. I think the focus looks a little too soft( handheld with low light maybe?).

    Cheers.

Yeah the first one was one of those wonderful moments when I actually had my camera and the shot just jumped out at me. It helped that the Austrians were all in bed early Sunday evening :D

All the shots were taken in low light and at ISO1600 and of course hand held. First time really going at night shooting so quite happy with some of the results.

The subway shot I like for the lines, I seem to have a fetish over those. The shot I prefer from this series is below unfortunately has what seems to be lens flair in it. Had this issue with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 with a few shots I took. Obviously it was opened wide up at ISO1600.

Love the subway one (colour) - i think it tells a totally different story with the wider context of the lines and surrounds included. There is loneliness and isolation in there. I love the reflection of the light source on the concrete flooring. Very nice indeed.

    Cheers.

first, thanks for posting them - following is meant as constructive criticism

#1 - i would have gone for a lower angle, the lamps on the left dominate too much... maybe i would have postprocessed to bring out the darkness detail more.

#2 - again, too much black space at the top. nice "boulevard of broken dreams" effect though, very moody.

#3 - focus too soft, looks much better in colour. did you use a tripod here?

Nope as I said it was handheld all the way. Need to get myself a new tripod as the one that I have is completely knackered.

One thing I'll say for Vienna I felt extremely safe walking around there at night with my kit, some unfortunately I wouldn't do in Dublin.

    1 too dark
    2 too crooked
    3 too soft

These are very atmospherica photos without a doubt, I like all three of them, but a few things would have made them better for me...

#1 as mentioned previously a bit too dark. I don't think it needs an angle change. The only reason the lamps dominate it is because they're bright and the rest isn't.

#2 is really cool, can I see it in colour? maybe you could straighten it a bit?

#3 seems a bit tight & claustrophobic, I think the landscape one works better. Would be nice if you could see across to the other side but it's a bit blurred. To see all the way across though would mean small aperture + tripod which you didn't have so...

    Nice photos overall though.

    I really like #2.

Would maybe straighten it and crop a bit of the left and top out.

    Nice one. :)

I like all three, but really like the 3rd.

The conversion to B&W looks good, detail is kept nice and high.

    Well done.
