    Hey folks,
hitting Egypt in a few weeks. I'm told they prefer Euros/Dollars.
Should I get Egyptian pounds or leave it?

    Many thanks

I have been twice - brought Egytpian pounds the first time and Euro the second! Euro are easier imho :)

Was over in Luxor there in June. I think the best thing to do is to bring your euros with ye and just change to egyptian pounds over there in a bank.
They have a much better exchange rate over there. Dont think they charge any commission when changing.

Egypt is very cheap - I'd suspect that you might end up spending more if you use a 'strong' currency like Euro or Dollar. I've only been once though.

one tip which is slightly off the topic, their money quality is very poor as in some of the notes are literally in tatters!! so I would advise to bring some sort of a hand satanisier spray/gel with you as it may prevent some of the nasty bugs that can arise while on a trip to Egypt and to use it after handling the money, it may sound strange but I have heard others its saved them picking up some of the tummy upsets!

    Agreed!!
Great tip. We also did this. Its a good idea to carry some hand sanitiser around with ye and give your hands a squirt from time to time. Keeps germs away!

Ive only been to Egypt once, but I found it much easier to pay in EGP. If you are using Euros or Dollars, they will tend to round everything up(observed from other people) We were in Cairo and a guy asked us for a tip, we had some loose Euros(about 3 or 4) and he wanted us to give him notes!! 1eur is about 10EGP- when giving tips most are more than happy with 4 or 5EGP

    Hey,

I would bring both. For tipping, bring some euro coins. At things like stalls, they would accept any currency. We brought some euro, some egp's and then used the ATMs for extra Egyptian currency, which we mainly used for meals.

It probably depends on where you're going, is it Sharm, Luxor, Cairo?

I would definitely recommend the hand sanitiser, the money is filthy. We used it after every transaction, just in case.

    Thanks for the advice folks!
We're off to Sharm for diving mostly, but I'm sure we'll hit Ciaro for a day or two.

Word of advice, if you are using the ATM option put your credit card in credit and then there will no cost incurred.

Definitely try and visit Cairo as Sharm won't paint the proper "Egpyt" picture for you, but Cairo is an experience esp their driving!!!

    It also smells very "interesting".
