Weight loss advice

    Hey

So i'm a 23 year old lad, 5'11 and 14 stone. I went into college under 13 stone and came out 14 stone...just goes to show the lifestyle i led!

When i was 18 i made **** of my knee playing football (cruciate ligament and damaged cartilage), i had the reconstructive surgery, but lets just say the surgeon made an utter balls of it and i haven't been right since. I gave up playing any competitive sport and only in the last year or so i had the confidence in my knee to start playing 6 a side. Was loving it and the knee was holding up but then one week i heard the familiar pop and thought the worst. It was only my medial ligament but since then it keeps popping and i'm limping for days after it. I've had so much physio and even laser treatment in Dublin but its still the same craic...the frustration i feel is ridiculous. Why me? What did i ever do to deserve this? etc etc

Anyway i want to lose weight! I was never a gym person but i went a bit in college particularly after the cruciate op. I wouldn't have the best of diets either but its not the worst at times. I have an exercise bike which is growing cobwebs at this stage but i feel if given a schedule to keep to i would use it daily. Jogging at this stage leaves my knee stiff and sore plus i despise running when not involved in a match of some sort!

And does anyone agree with me that all diets that are out there are ridiculous (for breakfast have some low fat yogurt and freshly squeezed avocado juice, for lunch have some goats cheese and freshly picked blueberrys...**** off!)

Would going to the gym and getting a personal trainer be the best option?

    Sorry for the rant!!!

Definitely hit the gym, and a personal trainer would probably be a good move with your history. Dust off the exercise bike, and think about getting a proper road bike as well. Cycling is one of the best forms of cardio for injured knees. I tore ligaments in my knee a while ago, and I could cycle miles while I was still using crutches and a brace for walking.

No, diets are not ridiculous. Diet is how you eat, and you obviously have to clean up your act with food. Base your diet on fresh whole food, the sort of thing you can buy in your local butchers, greengrocer and supermarket. Eggs, fish, meat, lots and lots of green vegetables, olive oil, some nuts and seeds, some cheese, some fruit (don't go overboard, veggies are better nutrition and lower calories), some whole grains. Nothing with sugar of any form on the first five ingredients. Nothing with transfats or ingredients that sound like a chemistery experiment. Cut booze way way back.

Good advice from Eileen above - and don't kid yourself - you will get results with hard exercise but you need to take a long hard look at what you are eating and how much you are eating if you are to see real results.

You say it all in the first line of your rant... 'lifestyle'.
There lies the answer. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets.
I wrecked my knee years ago and had surgery twice, but it only improved when I lost weight. Training is difficult and painful with a busted knee so diet must be included in your regime. However, if you focus on midriff exercises and brisk walking with your diet you can achieve your target weight. Be realistic about it and when you are tempted to eat something naughty, just think... 'image.'
    Chris.

And this part just shows how twisted our ideas about food and what is acceptable and not as regards health and fat loss can be!!
