Dell laptop, buy now or wait to next year...

    Hi All,

My "old" (turion ML32 1.8) laptop is starting to struggle for the type of work I do (mainly programming). I have now the chance to build a good laptop with my company and was keeping an eye on Dells outlet.

Found what seems quite stunning to me, a XPS M1730 CORE 2 DUO T9500 2.60GHz , 4.0GB RAM, 7200rpm 160GB HD, Go 8700M GT graphics NVIDIA SLI video card, 17" screen that makes a lump sum of 1198€ + VAT.

Now, I am not really aware of how is the computers market going and that is my dilemma. I am not in any rush, I could still stay with my old laptop and wait until Christmas or even Spring next year to get a better deal and wait for new models and better bargains. What do you think? Is it worth to buy now or just wait for a better time.

    Cheers!

Oh yes, sorry. Forgot to mention that fact. That laptop is actually from Dells outlet.

Many companies hold back their new models till after Christmas and the sales bit. They don't want to let their latest stuff go at a cheaper price of they can help it.
If your not bothered about being 6 months behind (maybe) the ultra latest tech' stuff, I'd recommend waiting till Christmas and taking advantage of the companies dumping what they then consider their old stock, shoving it into the sales (making space for the new stuff later) and get a bargain.

All the best and happy hunting.

thats not true. laptops really arent treated as such a christmas item. Laptops are a work item. They come out when they come out, and they like coming out in the spring and summer really: they catch businesses year round, but theres only really one time of year to catch college students.

We're both right and wrong. They used to be just a (industry) work related tool but as prices have dropped and more and more students are buying them for their collage work, many parents are giving them as Christmas presents. This has been noted in the market place and some sellers are trying to take advantage of this opportunity also by dropping prices at the appropriate times for the sake of advancing sales. Note the inclusion of them more so in the last few years along side the PC's within household advertising and junk mail coming through your door. They get just as plugged now in sales at Christmas as PC's are.

I bought two vostro 1000s last year. One in august/september for my sister heading back to college and one in the run up to christmas as a present for my mum. They were both €600 and specwise they were the same except that my sisters had a 3 year warranty, my mums only had the one year. Sometimes it costs you money to wait.
