Upgrading an old PowerBook...

I've had my 12" PowerBook G4 for 3 years now, and it still works as well as it did the day I bought it, but I only have 1GB free on my HDD (out of a measly 55GBs).

Is it difficult to upgrade a HDD? I see that internal SATA drives are now ridiculously cheap (like €70 for this 250GB Samsung one) But would a large HDD like this make my notebook run slower? What difference does the RPM make? Should I pay more to get a 7,200RPM rather than 5,400RPM HDD?

Then there's the question of RAM. I currently have 768MB DDR SRAM, but would upgrading 1GB make my notebook any more futureproof? The one I found on Dabs.com is quite cheap (€60) but is it worth it?

    Has anyone any advice?

powerbook g4 is not a task for the faint hearted. as a mac engineer I know. I wouldn't attempt it. even having done it many times the risks of pulling a connector off the board are there. I would estimate 40 screws all of varying sizes. get a professional to do it or you may be disappointed.

edit: I don't have my powerbook near me but are the drives not IDE?

I think you're right. My Powerbook is IDE anyway. The drive height is important too. 9.5mm rather than the older 12mm types - effects cooling apparently.

Here's another guide for the 12" Powerbook.
