Help needed - downloading and AV for new PC

I bought a new laptop (Toshiba Satellite) for my daughter. Decided to remove the Norton AV and replace with AVG (I use it on my own laptop and find it good).

Problem - during set-up I get a warning that I ned to download a patch for Vista with two links for either 32 Bit or 64 Bit, how do I know which patch I need to download?

I'm now thinking of switching to another AV, maybe Avast, if I do will I have similar problems?

    Using Vista Home Premium.

BTW, because I removed Norton from the laptop there is no AV protection at the moment.

    Thanks in advance,
    Phog

have you downloaded the lastest version of AVG??
Im using it on 2 vista pc's and havent got that
message. Ver. 8.x is the current version.

Oh are you sure you managed to get rid of Norton fully??
It's not to get it off sometimes

You will need the 32Bit version.

Here is a link for a Norton Removal tool in case you think you have problems also in that direction: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument

I personally recommend PcTool Spyware Doctor (built in Anti-virus). I have it on three machines and find it better, faster and less of a memory hog than a lot of others. It has found items on many machines I have cleaned in 20+ years that mainstream others have failed to find.
They also give away free an absolute excellent firewall too by the way.

I've been recommending Avira Free Antivirus since I've fallen out of love for Avg, newer Avg version 8.0 with link scanner is causing some problems and hogs memory. There wasn't a 64bit Avg at the time which is why I changed at first. I'm using Avira for 9 months and it has a really high detection rate, has saved me a few times handling infected torrent downloads.

    Here's what i use:

    Antivirus: Avira Antivirus
Spyware: MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware (i disable Super at startup) run a scan with each every few weeks
Real time protection: SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster with latest updates

Just to be sure I understand - with AVG I had an AV and Spyware, with Avira I have AV and need to download another Spyware, I'm right yes?

Does Aviara and one of the Spyware programmes update automaticaly as I know my daughter wont bother with updates.

Yes, AVG used just do AV, there was also AVG antispyware and AVG antirootkit which were seperate programs but they're all bundled in the new AVG 8.0. There are alot of complaints bout the new AVG being a resourse hog and the link scanner (scans every link on each webpage, unnecessary IMO) is known to crash browsers and hog internet bandwidth

Avira updates itself daily, it gives a pop-up reminding you that there's a bells & whistles version if you feel like paying for it, but I can live with that. MalwareBytes or Super don't update themselves, needs to be done manually, but it only needs to be run every few weeks. Both have a much better detection rate than AVG for spyware. If you want self updating, then you've gotta pay for it.

Another program to add is ccleaner, should be run every few weeks with malware scans. Brilliant tool, should be on every pc. Just make sure untick the box for the toolbar. Windows pc's need maintenance and updating. Follow all these steps and you'll have a troublefree pc, of course you've gotta also be careful what programs you install and don't let software install toolbars as many do,
