I've been looking at a few wedding venues, not seriously considering anything yet, but a lot of the places I've looked at have minimum numbers. We'd made up a sort of mock guest list and we came up with about 115 guests, but what happens if say we only got 90 definites closer to the time? Do they charge you extra? Has anyone else run into this issue?

our hotel have a minimum of 130 for sat weddings, we will have about 110-ish, they will charge a supplement fee per head short of 130, its 20euro less than the price of attending guests per head

We had slightly less than the minimum (maybe 10 or so less), but they didn't charge us in the end. Even if you aren't charged, make sure that the room doesn't seem too empty if you don't have the numbers.

Depends on the venue. Some venues will waive the room charge if you have over a certain number of guests. Some will charge a supplement per head on the main meal, others will ask you to make up the different per head to the minimum number.

You can't really know until you go looking at places really. Get your hands on the Georgina Campbell guide, this will usually tell you what the story is with numbers. As eoin_s says, you want to avoid places that are very big, otherwise your wedding might look very empty...

Thanks for the replies guys! We've been looking at smallish places, but definitely don't want it to look too empty! I never thought of that!! We're going to invite a good few more to the afters, but we're trying to keep the wedding and meal just family and close friends. I don't mind paying a supplement, I was more worried that some places might just say that you either have to have the numbers or they can't take you.
