County's top scorer of all time

ok, i was digging out the match programme from the all ireland football final of 2006. as normal, be it provincial finals (well there us to be) and all irelands, there is/ was great effort in compling interesting facts and figures about each squad member in the profile section of the programme, eg club, when they started, weight and height, club, honours etc.

in the 2006 final, mayo v kerry there was a great section which showed the number of championship appearances and score tally of each player from their champion debut right up to that final. you often hear from the commentators how many senior championship matches a certain player has played for their county and the amount of points etc.

you see it in soccer and rugby which notes the all time points, goals, try scorers and appearances etc.

i am asking, hopefully the statos are about, for each county, who is their counties all time points scorer and most "capped" player.

this is just out of general interest, hopefully some will find it interesting too. it probably be difficult to note each counties all time scorer but if we could get at least the top person for say the last 20 odd years that would be great. appearance and score accounts for the league would probably be too much to ask for, i guess.

    cheers

i will take a huge stab at it, knowing that i am probably completely off the mark, but for the past 20 years charlie redmond, including points and goals, is dublin's top scorer. now as for appearances and how many he reached, i dont know.

    Good thread!

I'd say Martin McHugh was Donegals top scorer and Matt Gallagher most capped, though I think Roper is close now.

    Must check it out.

in past 20 years, these are guesses score wise, i would be fantasic if any stato's can sort this out

roscommon - dereck duggan, tony mcmanus?, eddie lohan and frankie dolan got a fair lock in the late 1990's. as for appearances i take a stab at gay sheerin
    cork football - colin corkery
galway- hardly paudric joyce? maybe ja fallon, fingegan (1998 team, main free taker)
    mayo- maurice sheridan?
down-quietly confidenet it would be mickey linden
kerry - interesting, particularily the 1980's, its hardly maurice fitzgerlad?
    wexford football- surely mattie ford?
tyrone- considering he has being around since earlier 1990's and also main but prolific free taker, peter canaghan (damn spelling)
    who is kilkenny's top dog?

Are we talking hurling or the poor man's hurling here? :p

I know sweet f-all about the big ball stuff, but I do know that Paul Flynn is Waterford's all time leading points scorer. A quick glance to wikipedia tells me he has scored 24-181 from 45 games. I know Wiki is never the most reliable of places but that does sound about right.

With regards to appearences, I'd imagine it's a toss up between Flynn, Browne and Ken McGrath

The Tribune is class for stats like that, especialy on Hurling.

Think Mick Mackey may have scored the most in one championship game, 6-3 or something mad like that!

Haven't seen much All time scorer lists.

Matt Connor was very high in the early 80's. Often top scorer with league and more championship games in Leinster than Kerry, though Kerry had a shooting range against Clare or whoever!

Tyrone: has to be Canavan, F. McGuigan went to the States for a few years unfortunately.

Derry: Could be Muldoon, though Brolly, Gormley and P. Bradley were all big scorers.

    Down: Linden

Armagh: Has to be McDonnell with his goal scoring rate. Think the Tribune had him the best in Ireland last year.

IIRC, Eddie Keher is Kilkenny's all time top scorer, but Shefflin isn't far behind him

This is last twenty years right?
I'd fancy Oisin McConnville for Armagh but McDonnald might be right
Yeah looks like Linden for Down.
    Peter Canavan for Tyrone
    Maurice Fitzgerald for Kerry
    Mattie Forde for Wexford
    Declan Browne for Tipperary
Dessie Dolan for Westmeath or it could be Ger Heavin
    Dessie Barry for Longford
    Maybe Russ Munnelly for Laois
If it was 25 years I'd go for Ray McCarron for Monaghan but in this instance I'll go for Paul Finlay although I'm not sure.
    I'd say Corkery for Cork
Charlie Redmond for Dublin looks right as well
Martin McHugh for Donegal looks good as well
Padraig Joyce for Galway would have to be the one
The Derry one is very tight, hard one really, I'll have a stab at Enda Muldoon but I'm very unsure about Derry.

I'm gone blank now, I'm guessing by the way, not cerain on any of them, well apart from the Browne, Forde and Barry. If they are not the top scorers for their counties in that time frame I give up.

Bernard Flynn or Trevor Giles for Meath. Also,Geraghty and Faye could be in the run.

Charlie Redmond for Dublin or even Barney Rock (played up until late 80s)

    I'd say Brolly for Derry.

I think it is probably Eddie Keher.

Paddy Bradley is Derry's top Championship scorer of all time with 13-177 (216) from 44 Championship games. He is two points behind Peter Canavan and 14 behind Oisín McConville who are the top two Ulster scorers of all time.

As for appearance Enda Muldoon and Seán Marty Lockhart both have 45 Championship appearances, the most of the current panel. Not sure if they're the top of all-time, Seán O'Connell played over 200 games for Derry, although I don't know how many were in the Championship. Might be one or two others over the years who could've played more.

    Going by this last 20 years;

Armagh; Would think McConville is ahead of McDonnell
Derry; would go for enda gormley in derry.. paddy bradley must be catching up fast with all these back door games as well this last few years.
Tyrone; canavan must be a cert
Down; Linden probably alright, although mccartan and ross carr must be close too.
Antrim; they had a corner forward playing for ages who used to get all their scores, not sure of his name, mulvenna maybe
Cavan; had a full forward, fintan cahill was it, got a lot of their scores and then the midfielder who scored a pile of frees
Minds gone blank here on these names:o
Donegal; probably the wee man alright
Monaghan & Fermanagh; have'nt a clue here but would have a guess at finlay and brewster

    Blackbelt,

Would Stafford not be in the running? Or would he have played long enough? Doubt if Fay if anywhere near it.

My thinking would be the following

    Kildare - John Doyle
    Dublin- Charlie Redmond
    Wicklow- Kevin O'Brien
    Wexford- Mattie Forde
    Carlow- Johnny Nevin/Muckles Keating
    Laois-Tom Prendergast/Munnelly
    Offaly-Matt Connor
    Longford-Dessis Barry
    Louth-Stefan White
    Westmeath-Dessie Dolan

    Galway-P Joyce
    Mayo - Maurice Sheridan
    Sligo - Martin Brehony
    Roscommon - Junior McManus
    Leitrim - Maxwell/Darcy/Kenny

    Kerry - Maurice Fitz/Mikey Sheehy
    Cork - Tompkins/Corkery/Kavanagh
    Tipp-Declan Browne
    Clare-Martin Daly
    Limerick-Wudn't attempt guessing
    Waterford-Ditto

    Down-Linden
    Derry-Brolly/Gormley
    Donegal-M Boyle/Devanney
    Antrim-Not a clue
    Armagh-McConville
    Tyrone- Canavan
    Monaghan-Nudie Hughes/Mcenenay (sp)
    Fermanagh-One of the Gallaghers
    Cavan-Don't know

Laois Hurling - James Young who is in the top 20 table of all time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

Galway Football - Might be Padraig Joyce but I wouldn't be sure.

In hurling In don't know who's our top scorer but I know who will be by the time he retires. Joe Canning. He has already scored something like 3-28 in 3 championship games.

Mayo's top scorer is not Maurice Sheridan but Conor Mortimer. Maurice got 1-99 in Chmapionship so far Conor has tipped over 4-134.

As for most capped I'd have to go with Jimmy Nallen.

I'd say you would find that most of the highest capped (and highest scorers) players are from the recent era because of back door (unless they had great success like Kerry or KK)

Wow, genuinely surprised there. Not so much top scorer, but he will be the highest scorer in Ulster maybe next year. He really is that good though!

Think so, he was often one of the top scorers in the country in the 80's, counting League and Championship. Can't find a source to confirm!

Well if you are including Nudie for Monaghan then I'll definitely go for Ray McCarron. Iirc Nudie took a break from inter county football for a few years. And McEneaney is not close imo, he played midfield too often.

What about Manus Boyle? He was still kicking points for fun quite recently.

Caps? I thought we were on about scoring?

Oh now I see, someone mentioned appearances up above. I should have known a learned GAA type like Blackbelt wouldn't be foolish enough to mention Fay and scoring in the same post without a reason.

whilst the title of the treads states scores

if you read the first post i was asking for info on players with the most appearances and scores. Preferably of all time, but seeing from my guesses and other posts we can only go back as far as 25 years. of course it might be likely that the modern players would reach the top table due to the nature of the game and amount of games

if one know who the county top man in appearance and scores is in the championship, good, if they know who the county top man is in both leagues and championship that would be fantastic.

i wonder would this be a worthwhile project for any budding sport journalist to bring a book out on this? delve through archives etc to get figures

its a pitty that the gaa has neglected this in the past, seeing all this kind of thing is common in soccer and rugby etc

In fairness to the Sunday Trib they do have a bit each week on relevant stats for that weeks game.

Some of them are quite surprising

    )
    who is kilkenny's top dog?

    In football? No one.

Literally no one has ever scored an intercounty point for Kilkenny footballers*

    *this may not be true
