    hey everyone,

im tired of being ripped off by the rental shops and the hassle and queues in them...

i want to buy a board for this season. Anyone know of a retail spot in our fair isle or a decent website. i realise that burton cant be sold from the US to Europe.

    thanks

Theres a website called www.irishsnowboards.com , thats run from by a guy called Paul IIRC - think he does be on this forum from time to time - check out www.irishsnowboarder.com , he's defo on there!! I hear that he's fairly good on price and if you are buying a lot of gear he's willing to haggle - so get a few mates to buy also!!! ;)
    (Paul - do I get a discount for the plug :P )

There's also the Great Outdoors, just off Grafton St. - prices are a bit steep - they supply Burtons

Best option is to buy in the resort when you get there - usually a far greater choice of gear!! I rented the first year, then got hooked and bought on my second trip!

I'd be inclined to buy in resort as there will generally be a bigger selection on offer, depending on the point in the season you may get lucky with sales and you get to try it out that day to be sure that you are totally happy with it so easier to go back to them to sort things out. Of course once you've left the resort that benifit is gone, whereas it may not be with a retailer from back home though.

    Thanks lads,

I tried the website and it seems pretty good. "Curran" do you if they have a warehouse or anything that i can pop in to see the boards?

The resort idea is something that i was thinking about to! Again thanks lads!

Prepare to be ripped off by Aer Lingus or Ryanair now instead...

There are pluses and minuses to owning your own gear (skis/snowbaord):
    Pluses:
    - You always have the same stuff - so you spend less time getting used to it.
    - No queuing or waiting times to get fitted

    (There's probably more pluses :) )
    Minuses:
    - After a few years it's old - rentals are generally newish models.
    - Baggage costs of transporting your gear.
    - Will need waxing, servicing and eventually replacing.
    - Can't change to something else just for a day without extra costs.

I've had this conversation with a few Austrians down the years and their opinion is not to buy (we were talking about skis but i' m sure same goes for boards) unless you do more than 3 weeks a year - an they didn't have to factor baggage costs into the equation. The one thing they did say is you should always own your own boots.
