Been looking around to change car off an on for the last while, looking at S-Classes Ls 400's and Gs300, new avensis'i.

Pretty much come to the conclusion i aint gonna get as good as i have now, at least where mecanical reliablity comes into it.

So my 96 Carina will be the longest i've ever kept the same car 11 months.

    Hard to belive!!

Whats the longest you've ever kept the same car?

My current Civic holds the record, at 15 months. Although, I did have the same motorbike for 3 years a while back.

16 months and still going strong. Want to change it but can't justify the expense at the moment.

I bought my clio new in 2000. It's been my mams car since around 2004 but seeing as it's still in the family does that count?

Think my Safrane was the longest I;ve had, at around 18 months.

There's more to consider than reliability if you drive 8 or 9 hours a day. comfort and safety for you and your passengers are important too.

I never keep cars long enough to know how reliable they are!

Yep after 31st of December the age of the car cant be 9 years or older, however my 96 is good untill 2012.

Keep my last car the longest, 4.5 years, my father still has it.

Have my current car just over a year but I already have the ich to change, nothing has taken my fancy yet though.

How's that work? Do the new rules only apply to cars bought after a certain date or something?

For all cars passed out before 2009 the due date for compliance is 2012, for all ''new'' cars passed out after 1st of jan 2009 the car has to be under 9 years old.

They should reduce the cost of a taxi fare by 5% for each year the car is old. A brand new car will get 100% of the fare, 1 year old 95%, 2 years old 90% etc. It would encourage taxi drivers to drive modern cars and compensate passengers when the car they have booked turns up as a banger.

that idea would encourage punters to flag down older cars. not a great system IMO. and it would ruin the standardized taxi fare

Imagine being charged €4 more for a fare because your taxi was 08 as opposed to 05. would you be happy?

Taxi drivers have to make a living,

It would level out the playing field. Why should someone make repayments on a new Mondeo while someone else operates a Toyota older than ten years old for the same fare. The only logical thing for a taxi driver to do in that instance is to get an old, inexpensive car. And where does that leave the customer?

Maybe the top band could be for cars 3 years old or less and drop 15% at the third anniversary of registration.

I think I'll send this idea to the taxi regulator. I've just decided it's the best idea in the world. Ever.

    Current '00 5 Series - 22 months
    Previous '96 Rover 200 - 5 years
Previous scooter - 9 months, and I fell off it.

its up to each taxi driver in question to strike a good balance between things including value - eg if a 4 year old Avensis makes more sense than a brand new LS600h then so be it - the lexus driver shouldnt get any special treatment

Why should a passenger have to fork out more for a banal '08 Focus/Corolla/Liana when it would be cheaper and more comfortable to be in a 5 year old S Class, A8, L400, 7 series etc.

All that theory would do is to encourage drivers to buy small uncomfortable cars that just barely meet the statutory requirements.

It would also be unfair to a queuing customer who doesn't really have much say in what car arrives next.

Have one of my current cars for 7 years, the other 2 years. Since my 2nd car I have always had more than 1 car at a time. My worst was 5 cars at one time, it was a pain to keep them all running, starting them regularly, etc. Only one of them was worth significant money at the time, all the rest were £2k-£6k.

I bought my Micra in April 2004, and I still have it (minus an engine though).

As for the Ford Escort, I have that 2½ months now.

I have my Roewe for 2 years now and will probably have it for 1 more or maybe even more.:)

    My Car History:

    1981 Fiesta - bought 1993; sold circa1995
    1991 Fiesta - bought circa1995; sold 1997
    1994 Fiesta - bought 1997; sold 1998 ( a piece of S****)
    1995 Fiesta - bought 1998; sold 1999
    1996 Escort - bought 1999; sold 2001
    1999 Astra - bought 2001; sold 2003
    2002 Focus - bought 2003; sold 2006
    2005 A3 - bought 2006; sold 2008
    Current car - none.
    Reason - emigrating down under.

All the above were grand cars ( bar one of course!) and never gave me any trouble. I've been very lucky with my cars.

On my fourth vehicle since last August. I think the longest was, i've kept them for 4 months (three of them) and got an extra one in between which i had for and 3 months. So happy days lol. I think what i have now will be here until this time next year, unless something else pops up in between.

I had an Alfa 155 for five and a half years from new (no trouble). Had a Multipla from new for 7 years, no major problems (a small fuel leak from a cracked fuel fiter knackered the starter motor in its later years).

Had my first car, Mazda 323f, for just over two years. No real problems with it and sold it for the same price I paid for it.

Have the current car just over 2 weeks.
