Purity Rings

I was watching the MTV music awards the other day and how Russell Brand was taken the p*ss out of The Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings on their left hand ring finger which is a vow to God not to have premarital sex. These rings also mean they must abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
These new purity rings are appartently "cool" now amoung teenagers and committed Evangelical Christians. Its been quoted that these rings keep you "pure" till marriage.
Just wondering what boardsies views on premarital sex is? Myself i dont believe in it and I can guarantee that people like the Jonas Brothers will become nutters like Britney Spears when they turn 21. What your thoughts?

Loada shiite just to present a nice clean cut Disney image, which is fair enough.

Give the guys 18 months and they'll be sniffing coke out of a whores ass in a bar in Amsterdam.

the term "cool" cannot be applied to anything if it is derived from a group of crazies.

if we went by that logic, crayons would be cool because they taste nice.

usually these types of people live in back arse hick states where incest is a daily occurance. i dont think a ring is going to scare off their drunken fathers.

I think forcing celibacy on teens and early 20-somethings/pressuring teens to be promiscuous, are two sides of the same coin. Both equally horrible.

    Who're the Jonas Brothers?

basically a teeny pop boy band, was only introduced to them at these awards, and just at the look of them i knew i wanted to murder them, they're kind of like Hanson covering in glitter and shooting pink confetti out their arses

OT observation - but would it be a generalisation to say that: internet users & boardsies would be of a liberal leaning?

A similar thing was on digg lately - it's very pro Obama...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭Prof.Badass

well over here it's institutionalsized by what are supposed to be well meaning bodies that all but the most devout are made to feel like losers if they're not having sex.

i see nothing wrong with that statement :) (celibacy has nothing to with liberalism, though) if a non-religious person decided to wait till marraige i wouldn't have a problem with it.

Purity rings!? Grr! Where was this kind of technology when I was young, out of control and skanking it up all over town!? If only I had had a purity ring to keep me chaste. :p

Seriously though, I think the people who where them might be offended by my immediate reaction of, "Aw, that's cute," any time I hear about purity rings. I mean it, too! It's cute that they've sworn off sex until marriage and have a little ring to remind them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭fakearms123

all this celibacy and no pre-marital sex, you'll meet the love of your life and on your wedding night you wont even be able to make love to her/him, who needs that awkwardness on their wedding night, plus if you find someone you want to marry your going to want to express your love for them physically, stupid purity rings!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,473 ✭✭✭Adamcp898

I wonder do they take the ring off before they go to bed? ;)

Thought Jordin Sparks' logic was a bit, erm, interesting. She said to Brand:

"It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, Okay?''

The implication being that anyone who does have sex is automatically a slapper of the highest order.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jonas_Brothers

They are a kids boy band and it's not a bad message for preteen kids to wait until they are older.

Yup Honey-ec that was covered by some of the feminist blogs earlier in the week.

The fact that a serial 'swordsman' like Brand was even allowed talk to those pretty boys...whats the world coming to?

Next thing you'll be telling me America will be having a black guy or a chick in one of the top 2 positions in government.

If I met someone and they told me they wore a purity ring I'd slap them in the face, if you don't want to have sex before marriage fine, no need to be a pretentious tosser wearing one of these..

Fairplay to the Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks (she also made a dig at Brand at awards for dishing the rings) for keeping legs closed till marriage but i bet in a few months there be lots of kiss n tell stories about these "disney" celebs

I welcome their right to religious expression. I personally don't understand the need to abstain from alcohol, but that's just me. I don't see any Biblical reason to abstain when the general message is moderation. However that is also their right of expression.

As for purity rings becoming popular amongst Evangelical Christians, what concern is it to anyone else? It's their morals, nobody is forcing you to accept them. Having said that I personally support the message behind them.

Well they are from New Jersey, but anyway... I'm pretty sure that you are right about the incest though.

Bunch of freaky little bastards. Get a life ffs.

These crazy religions are worse than the catholic church was 50 years ago. Don't have sex, don't get divorced, shake hands with some stranger at mass...

How do young people think this sort of rubbish is a good idea?? When i was 16 i would have had some choice words for someone suggesting that i should hold off on sex. It was hard enough work making any progress in that department without taking yourself out of the game.

Maybe the people who object to the evangelical christians' purity rings want to get stuck into said evangelical christians? :pac:

It's not so much that it is a premeditated thing though. They do seem to be genuinely good people giving 10% of their income to charity. I don't know many others in the business that do that kind of thing. Last year they donated $1.2 million. Not to be scoffed at.

Meh, I don't have a problem with it. They're the ones missing out.
Though I don't see why they should abstain from alcohol - I mean Jesus turned water into wine ffs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

square_igloo: I'm sure they'd argue that those in the secular community are missing out living the risen life that Jesus has called us for. As for alcohol you are entirely correct, however Christianity also obliges people to follow the law of the State in which they live in (except in cases of persecution and revocation of rights to religious practice) - consult Romans 13. If I am correct they are all under 21, and the US prohibits alcohol to under 21's in most states.

Jakkass, there is a "chastity movement" - part of which is "The Silver Ring Thing" - gaining impetus in the Bible Belt which is spreading the terrible message that sex is dirty and evil. Dress it up whatever way you want but that cannot be a good thing. So these teen couples are getting married at 18 just so they can have sex, or they're engaging in anal sex because that means virginity is not lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭Agamemnon

Sounds daft to me but if it's something they generally keep to themselves, then it's their business. If, on the other hand, they are urging other people to do the same, then they deserve all the ridicule that will come their way when they eventually succumb to the temptations of the flesh. I'd find that just as laughable as pop stars telling us to drop Third World debt and reduce our carbon footprints.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

I'm not sure that they regard sodomy so highly in the Bible Belt either. The idea behind it seems to be that they consider pre-marital sex to be sinful in the Christian faith, and their moral conscience tells them they should wait for marriage. As for being married at 18 I don't see that as all a negative thing if the couple truly love eachother. I think you will find that is the legal age for marriage in Ireland too.

I think it's hilarious that a lot of these tween pop acts are supposedly "devout Christians" with their purity rings and such. Only recently Miley Cyrus, think Britney Spears circa 1998 but more Disney, had her email account hacked into revealing self-took "candid" photographs and emails detailing her sexual activity with one of the Jonas brothers.

If that isn't hypocrisy at it's finest I don't know what is!

If that is your interpretation on it, I'll leave you be. It's their right to freedom of religious expression, and purity rings come into that bracket.

Sex as something sacred etc and only for within marriage is a construct. There's nothing at all sacred about it. It's basic and functional and the species would die out only for it. I'm not advocating promiscuity among teens, and sex is usually better within a loving relationship, but religion has twisted it into something to be feared, to be put on a pedestal, to be only between two people who are in love with each other. Religion has warped people's minds to view it as dirty, sinful, evil, wrong. The sex industry has also warped into something commercial, cold, crass. I think the two are as bad as each other.
The above is very damaging and disturbing and feels like a serious regression.

Fair enough in your opinion, and believe me I respect it. However the Jonas Brothers, myself, and other Christians across the world hold a different view. Sex brings forth life, and life is a gift.

I disagree with this opinion again. Christians think sex is a special thing, not something to be cheapened. The key factor here is circumstances, I for one do not support one night stands, amongst the various acts that seem to be cheapening the rather special act sex is. Unlike you, I consider one to be considerably better (what is happening in Christianity). However I don't believe in demonizing people for premarital sex, I consider it wrong, but Christians too often point the finger instead of helping and listening and of course showing their compassion to other people in society.

These people were brainwashed since birth. What chance did they have? You would almost feel bad mocking them if it weren't so bloody enjoyable.

my facts could be way off here but doesnt russel brand suffer from sex addiction? and he sneers at the jonas bros? personally i dont see anything wrong with the concept of abstinance, fair play to them if they keep their promise, i know the majority of people wouldnt have the self-disipline or determination to abstain for a prolonged time never mind untill marriage. It would be different if they were pushing other teens to jump on the purity-ring bandwagon but they're not, they didnt deserve the comments, especially not from russel brand!

It's one thing to abstain from sex, it's another when you promote yourself as a virgin by wearing a purity ring. Why the need to publicly proclaim it for the world to hear? If it's something that personal, keep it to yourself. These damn rings are being used as a blatant PR stunt to portray a wholesome image to young America, disillusioned with their previous role models e.g. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera etc.
