I am so very not going into first year. this is my fifth and final freshers' week.

the Ents planners are sitting in the office being packed ready to be sent out to all the incoming freshers over the next few days. Website due to launch anyday now.

Society events are starting to appear on websites and some of the better societies are sending their mail-outs in the next week.

The only reason you've heard what's happening in NUIG is because it's happening far sooner. Trinity start back latest of all the colleges in the country, of course not everything has been announced yet. If you go back 3 weeks or so, NUIG's events would be a mystery also.

I doubt that. Possibly your last one as a registered student, but you'll still be around.

I've seen the ents poster and it looks great. There'll be a special ticket price for people who want to go to all the Ents events, which will save you money on buying event tickets individually (note: this will only cover SU Ents events, events run by societies aren't included unless organised in association with Ents).
Society events are starting to appear on websites and some of the better societies are sending their mail-outs in the next week.
I know of at least three big society websites that are being worked on as we speak. I suspect there are many others.

In general, keep your eyes peeled and check the SU and society listings on www.tcdlife.ie regularly.

If you're on facebook have a search around for TCDSU groups and Ents groups. There are quite a few and some fo them have details fo the upcoming Freshers' week events.

There is always loads going on. And yeah it kind of seems quiet as all your friends have started back already and are going to things, but seriously it will be excellent.

Also few colleges are as lucky as Trinity with the wonderful venue of Front Square for the society/club/SU/PUBS stands.

Have some patience and don't give up on your college just yet.

Anyone want to take a guess at home many different LUAS crawls there are going to be this year?

anyone want to explain this whole 'Ent' thing and LUAS crawl to a totally new, soon to be Trinity student?pleasseeeeeee

also i have no intention of giving up on my college yet. i have valiantly for the last two weeks, given hell to ucd students in the name of old trinieth (and taken some flak myself)

ENTs= Entertainments. The short hand as such for any students union nights out/events, the name of the entertainments officer.

LUAS Crawl, this is in now way unique to Trinity. It's a pub Crawl on the LUAS where you do a drink at every stop. SO you get off at every stop and go to a different pub.
And would you believe I've never been on one.

Ah but thats because Freshers week is a very busy time for people in socs and stuff. In fact I only ever really get hammered on the Friday night. I go to the nights out, but am soo aware of the fact that I'll have to be in Front Sq. bright and early the next day.

Ents (short for Entertainments) is part of the Students Union that organise events, nights out etc and is headed up by the Students Union Entertainments Officer, this year Nick Longworth. They focus mostly on Freshers' Week, End of Exams, Rag Week, Mystery Tours and another big night time event at the start of May.

I've wanted to put together a proper description of the different bodies within college and how they work together, but I really don't have time. Anyone else want to put together a quick description and maybe throw it on the wiki. I mentioned here that we need to update it a bit.

Ok I had a look at the Bikki. It is ages out of date. There were 5 Faculties . Anyway, I've done a small bit of a tidy- well changed it to 3 faculties but haven't edited any of the content, I also updated the mods. i'm going to do a bit on the technical stuff over the next few days, but there is a lot to do. So if people feel like contributing...

If you don't feel like putting in any TCD stuff, then have a look at the regular posters bit. I just added my name, but many of the posters listed there hardly ever post here now, so you could just add your name to the list.

(I'm not sure even I am going to get into Ronny's planned description of all the various bodies in college SU/CSC/PUBS)

Oh and we could do with some more myths and rumors stuff.

Just a point - I had a conversation with Ed and someone else at one point as to how much the Venga boys apparently cost - can anyone remember the figure? it was something ridiculuous for them.

I remember that conversation. Though I may be remembering another conversation with someone from DCU. Either way, yes, I remember the figure being huge.

Well when you say Venga boys do you mean the two DJs or the Djs and the dancers. I'd pay to see those cool/naff dancers.

I can't wait for the foam party in Freshers Week! Apparently it is in Dandelion, that huge place up in Stephen's Green? Anyway, I haven't been to a foam party in Ireland before, only on holidays, hopefully it'll be just as fun indoors!

What's this about a foam party?? When?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭Scarinae

Ok I was wrong, it's in Citi Bar not Dandelion!!

According to the Freshers Week After Dark Planner:

    Monday:
The Free Gaff Party in the Hub, 8pm-12.30am, in association with the Kayaking Club
Fallout with Biosoc in Redz, 10pm-late; tribute to Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin
(this is one ticket for two venues)
    Tuesday:
Traffic Light Ball in Tripod, 10pm-late, sponsored by Spin 103.8
    Wednesday:
Foam Party in Citi Bar, 10pm-late, in association with DUBES
    Thursday:
Mock Wedding in Bar 52, 8.30-10.30pm
    >>snip<< (Unmentionable MCD event)
    Friday:
Toga Party at the Pav, 6pm-11pm, in association with the Archaeology Society

Apparently a ticket to the whole lot is only €26

I got this info from the following facebook group: http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=25103413009

It's more of a group/community thing, so I think you can pretty much add what you want and then other people can eidt it if its inaccurate. So yep, add/don't add...

    Ohh Freshers week yay!!

    And moving in w00t!!

Can't wait to see the mock wedding/free gaff party. I think I'm already committed to being at a night out when the foam party is on, and I'm pretty much happy to have the BESS ball as my one and only DUBES activity of the year.

Also a foam parrty in Citibar- I assume that is going to be the basement only? I mean I can't see the club owners leeting them get foam all over the wood floors on ground and first stories, not to mention and chairs and such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

My freshers' week nights are already booked pretty solid, but if they weren't there's at least two of these (Free Gaff party and Foam Party) that I wouldn't check out. Assuming they're run better than the shambles ENTS events have been for the last few years (which even the most die-hard SU-heads among you have to admit is something of a big "if"), this could be the year when the SU's Entertainments office actually starts entertaining. Fair play to Nick Longworth! (and so much for the predictions of dooooom after his election)

Gotta ask what the deal is with the Saw Doctors though; since when have they been popular or 'cool'? "Bands my parents liked in the early 90s" doesn't exactly fill me with excitement, but they seem to be playing a fair few student circuit gigs lately - what happened? I've always known I wasn't pop-culture savvy, but falling behind a trend when that trend is the Saw Doctors is just kinda...depressing.

You're way out of touch with what people are in to in that case.

    When is freshers week?

I'm back from holidays on the 6th and if its on then I'll have a few days before I have to go back to work so it be a nice way to waste away a few days. I've a feeling its the week before

    Its the week before.

Also the Free Gaff party is in doubt due to the fact the Hub won't be finished.

Too true ronnie! Ive seen them a handfull of times in castlebar and theyve never let the crowd down. :D

On a personal note I'd like to encourage rising junior freshman to attend as many things as they can on fresher's week. It's been 6 years since I was in your place, but that week burns brightly in my memory. Significant fun was had.

Also, Yes, very much looking forward to it, as a rising JF, and will, indeed, heed your advice. I feel alot more comfortable now then I did this time last year as I only knew a few people in college. So this year should be great fun.

Tempting to rename the thread "Fresher's Weak", just for that.
Looks to be fun, though my debs is on the Friday so I'll be somewhat otherwise occupied.
Are there events on during the day/afternoon too?

Yes, I did wonder who this lucky Fresher is, having a whole week dedicated to them...

There should be loads of stuff on during the day, and there'll be more than that on at night as well... That's just the official Ents stuff, there'll be other things arranged by various clubs/societies! This is my last (official) year of this and I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Yeah events usually get going from Lunchtime onwards, with free breakfasts from several societies and occassionally the SU (in the JCR) in the mornings. (Don't know if the SU ones are only for RAG week or not).

By Friday things have more or less quietened down. All the people who have helped out during (read worked till the fell down with exhuastion) tend to be next to asleep on the stands, and the free stuff has run out and there's an air of fatigue and hangovers.

Im a pretty sociable person but i wanna be able to make the most of my 1st week and am really worried i won't have as much fun as you guys who got halls *sob* :(

Seriously its not as hard to meet people as you imagine. I remember thinking at the end of MT that it would have been really easy if I had lived in Halls, but that doesn't mean it was hard.

I met one of my best friends at a paintball target practice during Freshers week. I met the other in a que in the arts block 5 days later. Seriously EVERYONE is looking to meet people. Freshers week will perhaps be a little awkard as you haven't gotten drunk with the people you're meeting, where as those living in Halls probably have, but you still meet people and in the first few weeks of term there are so mnay 'getting-to-know-people-events'.

If you're doing science/engineering you'll also have loads of hours and thats a good way to meet people.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 38 wittsend90

I'm not in Halls either and I'm the exact same as you! I just wanted Halls to meet people but I'm just gunna join clubs and stuff. I pretty out-going so it's just a matter of falling in with the right crowd! I can't wait though!!!
