Hey... I'm desperate...I neglected my hair whilst I was in hospital...I have these major thick dread like knots at the back of my head ( I have tried everything !!!!) ...I have my debs next week...Should I bow to the inevitable and try to cut them out or should I go to a hairdresser???????

Try soaking your hair in conditioner for several hours and the getting at it with a comb. Or Ring a hairdressers and ask their advice.

    Hi

Try not to panic and dont pull at the knots as you will only break the hair and make them worse. Try putting some conditioner into them over night and then try to seperate them using your fingers.

A good hairdresser will be able to do this for you and if needed them can trim it into anice style if you try cut them out at home it could be a total disaster

Thank for the help but the problem is my hair is past my shoulders...I did not loose my hair whilst I was ill...hence I really do not want to have to cut it short...the knots are sooo bad...I've tried a leave in conditioner...I'm not even sure if a hairdresser would even try and remove them :(

Try clothing conditioner, I've seen it done with extremely cury hair before, wrap a hot damp towel or cling film around the area, as the heat will intensify the conditioning.
Then use an afro or wide tooth comb and gently move it from the root to the knot and it should eventually be able to move through, but don't force it work it gently.

    Hairdresser.

Don't put anything else in it. And don't go to a hairdresser where two sixteen year old apprentices will stand behind you with horrified expressions. Pay for, and go to, a proper, professional outfit. Ring around first, explain the situation, and go to someone who makes you feel hopeful on the phone.

No don't. Seriously, don't!! I used to get matty knots in my hair. I used Aussie miracle conditioner to get them out, literraly bottles of the stuff over a few months.

I know you've tried the leave in codintioner but use a proper coniditioner. A good thick hair mask and sleep with a shower cap on/towl on the pillow. And go to the hairdressers, a proper one. You do not want a noive going near your hair. Ask if you can have a loan of the money to go. Seriously, hair can be hugely important and you don't want an inexperienced person making the current problem worse. If you do get it cut you'll want a good cut to give your hair a chance to recover.

Leave in conditioner is like watered down regular conditioner so you're only wasting your time with that. Get an intensive conditioner or treatment and apply it generously to the knots, then leave it in overnight. Start detangling with your fingers and at the end of the knot closest to the ends of your hair, this way you can gradually seperate the knot. If you start at the top part of the knot, closest to your roots you'll just end up breaking all your hair. As it loosens a bit you should be able to comb it through.

when i was little (about 8-10 i think) my mom went into hospital for about 2 weeks. i didnt brush my hair the whole time. (i think i'd decided it was her job and i had too much fun stuff to do, like being up various trees or something to worry about girly things like combing my hair) anyway, eventually my mom got to come home, and was greeted at the door by my mass of tangles and knots and matts :P she spent hours just very carefully combing each knot out. took forever, but finally got them all out. if you have anyone around that patient to help you comb it out, then get a really good conditioner/repair mask, you should be ok. cheaper than going to a hairdresser (although if you can find the money for a decent one, i'd suggest that :D)

Good to see you posting about hair and debs as opposed to illness and exams; hope life is returning to normal and you enjoy your debs with your fab newly detangled hair! :)

When I had hair extensions my hair dresser told me to use Fabric Softener. I soaked my hair in Comfort for a few hours, it worked too.
