I see all these nice cars about but how much do you actually need to earn to drive certain cars...

    I earn 25k and drive a 96 seat ibiza worth 500 euro.

About 12 euro an hour and no car. Happily.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

A bit more salary wise and drive a 99 Lexus. I find it amazing to see women driving doing the school run and to the shops in Audi Q7s*. How much are there husbands earning to be able to afford to buy that kind of jeep for the school run!

*This is not a sexist remark and is just an observation as I seen it twice,

I've always though between 25%-50% of your salary was the average price of your car

Before bonuses and on call, I earn about €30k.

I don't drive, but might get a provisional license in a few months.

You could probably upgrade to a 98 Corsa and not go broke, but would you really want to? If you don't spend much on booze and hoors you can spend more on motors.

I think asking people to post their car value as a percentage of their salary might be less intrusive OP

That all depends on what your into, I spent a small fortune (to me anyway) on my car but I love it, my first car was €8k was a 99 merc a class and I loved it soooo much, I earned about 25k at the time, I earn about 40k basic now and my car was 22k two years ago (used) but I own the car outright. It really does depend on how much of your salary you want to spend repaying a loan - and for how long, if a nice car is what your bothered about etc, if you have a mortgage blah blah blah, you could easily be driving around in a nice 98 bmw which will not cost you the earth but will look a whole lot nicer that your seat ibiza!

I was just about to say that. when I bought my car it cost me 78% of my gross salary.

Based on that, my current car is about 6-7% of my gross salary. I like a nice car, but couldn't justify spending ludicrous amounts on one just to look out the window and watch it loose value faster than a falling rock.

nah, it's really not, I drop my daughter to school every day and the cars the mothers drive are unbelievable, from Audi q7's to range rovers to 6 series convertibles! and NONE of them work, I know this for a fact! I'm just jealous that I didn't marry a ridiculously rich man - too late now!!

    Whatever you can afford.

One thing you can be sure of is that when you see someone who looks under 30, driving a car that's €40k new, you know that they've either expanded their mortgage or locked themselves into a crippling motorloan just so they can have people think that they're loaded. Either that or it's a company car.

My car was worth 36% of my salary when I bought it 3 years ago. Now it's worth less than 10% of my salary.

    06 2.0L TDI VW Passat - love it! :D

Cost: too much! But as my job has me out on the road a fair bit, it's effectively my office so I deserve it.

What a stupid and invasive question!

    Earn:75k
Car:30k and changed every 2 years

or was it Earn:125K Car: €1500.

Remember where you are. All is never as people paint it!

Or they are loaded, or the car is stolen, belongs to their ould fella...

I drive a beautiful Golf :) (04), bought it 2nd hand this year. Worth about 55% of my salary.

If a car is costing you 55% of your salary, you can't afford that car (in my opinion).

That completely depends on the individual's situation. I still live with my parents so pay very little rent, only bill I have is my phone bill, have no mortgage, no children. So I can more than afford it!

    .

Aye, because everybody in nice cars actually own them. Just get yourself up to your neck like everybody else..

I earn a decent amount of cash every year.

I live in Dublin city so I don't need a car.

    Now begone with your questions.

She didn't say it was costing 55% of her salary, she said that's what it's worth.

The purchase price of my car was 78% of my gross salary, but the monthly cost is only 20% of my net monthly pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,772 ✭✭✭✭fits

I drive a ****tyish car too. But its my first and I bought it with money I'd saved rather than with a loan. So I'm proud of it in a way. Gonna keep it until it dies/rusts.

Its worth about 6.6% of my enormous (ish)* salary.

*By ish, I mean not at all enormous.
