It shows for me the stealth of PPS being a national identification number. Despite what we are told its primarily for social security purposes, Revenue use it, the banks are using it, the Resident Tenancy Board to register tenants, to purchase Prize bonds, a requirement for new driving licence, HSE to id client and for services, schools for pupil registration, local authorities for their tenants, school kids for state examination and now the Gardai for identification purposes. Why don’t they come clean and tell us the truth that your PPS number is now a national identification number which all state and a lot of private organizations are using for identification purposes. What alarms me is the Gardai having access to the Social Welfare records where there is not a criminal investigation taking place and we are told they are not to use if for identification purposes. Just so much for civil liberties and all that.

What makes you think the gardi have access to social welfare records?

Well they do - once you've GIVEN PERMISSION to them by handing in a garda vetting form.

Is it the full database or just a subset of the database, or is it just their own database of criminal records indexed by pps number.

FYI the tax office don't issue PPS nos., only Social Welfare can do that. Also PPS nos. are not issued on the spot, they have to be posted out to you which can take about 10 working days. Your mate from the US must have already had a PPS no. if the tax office were able to trace it for him.
