Freetext 'DONOR’ to 50050 and they'll send you out a card.

    Do it now. Why not?

Am I an organ donor? Yes... would anybody want my organs after they've been used and abused for so many years? Debatable.

I do carry a donor card, it'd be nice to think that if the worst happened to me that my organs could help save someone else.

I was looking into this from a policy perspective the other day, and I was wading through piles of studies about people's attitudes to donating.

Turns out that people are far keener to donate a close relative's organs than their own:(

The lesson: If you don't want to donate, die after your siblings.

I carry a donor card and I'm surprised others don't.

It gives your death an added meaning if you can enhance the quality of, or save anothers life, when you no longer exist.

Just sent away for mine. Been meaning to get one for a while.
I think it's a great thing. I don't need my organs when I'm brown bread.

As someone who's Dad was a heart transplant patient, I carry a donor card. Believe me, when it comes knocking on your door, you'll be glad someone took the time to fill in the card.

The title of this thread should be Why are you NOT an organ donor?

There's no excuse really. When you're gone, your gone. Better to not leave the stress to your family to decide whether to donate your organs or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,578 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

Well I can't be an organ donor, or give blood for that matter. There are excuses.

Tell that to the parents of dead babies, whose organs are/were used for medical purposes. It's a bit off topic but it's the same argument, doctors are not God's!

We should automatically have the right to say no, and not feel any guilt about it.

It's not my fault that 'Bobs' liver doesn't work anymore.;)

    Have you got AIDS?
Or just a fear of needles/death?:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

But why would you say no? Especially if it's helping another human being.

Obviously what happened with the babies was awful and should not have happened. Everyone does have the right to choose. I'm just asking the question why not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,578 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

    Not AIDS thankfully!
T1 Diabetes. There are loads of reasons for not being able to be a donor though.

Probably more correct. The reason I'm not an organ donor is because I'm still alive (though if someone really really needed a kidney I'd oblige).

Surely the thread should read, "Why do you not carry an organ donor card?"

No the thread title is fine as it is except for the spelling mistake. If the OP wanted to ask people why they are not organ donors, then I'm sure they would have named the thread appropriately.

Personally I don't like the guilt trip that some blood donors and organ donor card carriers send non donors on.

Well most people you met on an average day wouldn't help you too cross the road.... when they were alive, so my point is why help somebody you've never met and never will met, help to live a few extra years?

But in all seriousness i believe organ donating is a great thing!

Any body out there with a spare liver organ?
    mine's all used up.:p

It would be a different story I would imagine if it was someone close to you who needed an organ donation.

Yeah I've got a donor card in the wallet...

It's almost insulting to those in need of organs to let yours rot in the ground rather than give them up for donation. It's like dangling food in front of a starving person...

And it doesn't even require effort unlike donating blood and the likes!

Ah that old chestnut. It wouldn't actually be a different story. I wouldn't send people on a guilt trip for not becoming organ donors just because someone I know needed an organ. I might be a lot more likely to try to change their minds about it but I'd still respect their decision not to be a donor.

But you'll be dead so it won't matter. Better to give someone the chance of life than feeding it to the worms.

I've never tried to guilt trip people into anything myself. I don't think I've really discussed organ donation with anyone before. I just can't comprehend why someone wouldn't donate.

Fair enough if you're not deliberately trying to guilt trip anyone but imo some of the below comments would fall under the heading of guilt trip even if they weren't intended that way:

    ditto

Also my last experience of donating blood in Ireland was less than positive as opposed to in the UK where they were nice and more appreciative. So re blood its UK only for me now.
In addition now that I have diabetes I'm probably classed as a drug skank under the irish classiication.

However the whole 'give 2 livers to alcoholic Geroge Best' is something i would be opposed to and seeing this abuse then I would be more reluctuant to share parts of my body. Also I would be afraid that if I was on lifesupport or something that doctors might be more likely to want to pull the plug to get my ripe organs.

    Possible Stupid Question Alert!

Is there a database of donor card holders somewhere?

I only ask because when I imagine the scenario of my death, I am usually naked, and the Thai hookers that have provoked my cardiac arrest (along with industrial quantites of coke etc etc) will probably have stolen my wallet along with aforementioned donor card. And of course when my ma elicits the full details of my demise, she'll be far too upset to consider any request concerning 'organs'... :pac:

Yep, I have an organ donor card. Strip me for parts once I'm gone, I don't give a sh*t!

I do, however, think it's disgraceful that your family can override your wishes even if you have a signed organ donor card.

they can? i thought once you signed the card it was final?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,844 ✭✭✭Honey-ec

Nope, they get the final say. In fact, the IKA actually advise you to have your next of kin sign your card also to show their willingness to honour your wishes.

They also say "The next of kin's permission is then sought to remove the organs for transplantation before the body is prepared for burial."

This happens regardless of whether you've a card or not.
