In sad news Microsoft has decided to close Ensemble Studios after it completes the Halo Wars RTS. The 13 year old company is best known for the development of the highly successful and popular Age of Empire series which has seen total sales of the series exceed 20 million.

Its a strange decision to say the least.

    Wow. That sucks.

Age 1 was what really got me into games, many many moons ago...

It doesn't make me want to pick up Halo Wars – I doubt they are going to spend much time improving or balancing the game.

I think MS said something about it not being the end of the franchise.

Weird decision though. Can't understand why they made it. All of their games sold well - something in the order of 15 million units in total I think.

20 million in total. AOE 3 sold 2 million and I know the first expansion did quite well too.

Microsoft have confirmed they own the rights to the AOE franchise and do intend to make more of them at some stage.
