    Well this experiment was funded by lots of countries and the UK contribution of £80M/year is actually less than the budget of a medium sized University/year.

    Look at all the Billions in aid that has gone to Africa over the years and how has the place improved? :mad: :mad: Many governments have already erased third world debts amounting to billions. Countries in Africa and other third world countries have received billions in aid and much of it has been squandered. A lot of NGO's will tell you that money given by other world governments often never makes it to the people, it instead disappears into a big black hole...and not one created by the LHC either. :p

    You wouldn't be able to make your point without the stuff you're giving out about.

    The world wide web came to us from....*wait for it*.....CERN!

    Do a bit of research there and try to get a sense for what you're talking about before you rant.

    For example - how do you know about the starving people in Africa? Is it the news? How do you get the news? A TV? Getting it's signal from a....*wait for it*.....satellite?

    You're right though, you don't get it.

    Maybe it helps considering it all from an outside view. Think about what one would think if he sees our society for the first time and learns about the current situation? I mean there's one side, in which there are billions of Euro/Dollar/Whatever spent on experiments, like LHC, or other very important ones. Or on wars. The other side is that people are dying, not being cared about, that what we describe as the Third World. What would one think? Our society as such is fairly recent, the modern age isn't very much in terms of time, we have to learn a lot. The truth is that in most of the cases the governments (who could actually remedy the entire situation in an combined effort) don't think it's profitable enough. That's right, it's all about profit. They think that if they give money to them, or other material, they know they are not gonna get anything of value back. So they don't do it. And the result, well, you know. Organizations of humanitarians are in the process of trying to remedy the situation, however, at this speed it would still take an awful lot of time.

    So why would governments invest this money into space exploration or science? I tell you why. Because their country name is on the tag of who participated, and that in turn gives them fame, and in the long run also money. Or why do they pump it into wars? Because wars are always good for a certain branch of people, who happen to be involved in circles that avail of virtually limitless amounts of money... say, banks. The rich always want to get richer. They never give. In the current society, this is the way it is.

    It'll take a long while, probably centuries, before this changes. If man is still alive by then.

    Stephen Hawking;

    "Both the LHC and the Space program are vital if the human race is not to stultify and eventually die out. Together they cost less than one tenth of a per cent of world GDP. If the human race can not afford this, then it doesn't deserve the epithet 'human'."

    Why don't you complain about the amount the world spends on weaponry instead of complaining about advancing science, the science that enhances all of our lives on a daily basis.

    I notice you didn't mention sports grants or government jets.
    There are far more money pits more deserving of critisism first.

    Well the under lying assertion is that if we spent this money on starving people in Africa things would be better. We (the western world) spend billions on starving people in Africa and the problems seem to improve very little. It is rather a myth that the problems in the third world can be solved by simply throwing aid and money at them.

    While all that aid is going on back in the real world scientific research is actually improving things immeasurably for people around the world. After all what good is a poor African having $100 to spend if they have no electricity, lighting, communication, medicine etc to spend it on.

    What a ridiculous thread. The problem of starvation, etc., is not about money, it's about political will. If Ireland suddenly had a surplus of €1 trillion, the current government would probably spend it on gold-plated chairs for Leinster House and diamond-studded jackets for the ministers. There's plenty of money to go around, the LHC costs f*ck all in the grand scheme of things. If there was a genuine desire to eradicate poverty, it would be done, pure and simple.

    Human advancement through arts and sciences elevate all humanity, and are worthwhile and noble endeavours.

    Sadly the provision of aid resulting in the entrenchment of dictators and the corrupt is a commonplace occurance.
