    Hi,
Posted this in bargain alerts requests, was suggested to try here.
I want to get the GF a pink dell inspiron laptop but want to get XP on it and not vista?
    Is this possible.
    Cheers.

I'm pretty sure dell have stopped selling machines with xp, except for the inspiron mini 9. If you buy a machine with vista business, it offers the option of a free downgrade to xp i believe. Why the need for xp?

What negative experiences have you had with it?

Only just got my first Vista machine last week and aside from the initial indexing think it's grand.

There seems to be a lot of negativity to vista because of teething issues it had when first released. Yes, it uses more resources than xp, but any modern machine with a dual core processor and 2 gb of RAM will handle it no bother.

My GF's current laptop has vista and she hates it.
I had a laptop with vista last year and have to say I hated vista aswell, everything was a struggle and it seemed to be locked down heavily when you tried to network it or ftp etc.
It was only released when i got it so it could be teething problems but it just wasnt for me.
I saw the business option of downgrading but its not on the selected coloured inspirons.
    Cheers for the replies.

You can always go for the pink EEEPC 900/901 which comes with XP as default. Cheap & cheerful. Will also fit neatly into any handbag.

this only answers the bargain alert bit but there was a pink studio 17" on dell outlet this morning for €620 (excl. vat and shipping) - had 4gb of RAM, 2.x processor so should be fine with Vista.

901 is definitely recommended. So long as she doesn't have massive hands :D

She can get around that by having pointed finger nails :D

Come back in a years time when you have less space on your hard disk, and you require many multi-threaded processes and good performance.

Ubuntu and OSX are light years ahead as far as OSs go.

Or XP as it is quite stable (how many years did it take them to get it to this point).

Just a few reasons why Vista sucks...
Every time you turn it on it will hijack your net connection to 'phone home' Bill Gates
Simple jobs like System Restore that took 2 or 3 minutes on XP take 7-12 minutes on Vista (and mine would have been pared down to the minimum )What on earth is it doing to take 10 minutes for a System Restore???!!!
Boot up time is way longer
Many many users including myself on self installed OEM on custom machine and wife on her Sony Vaio can not get Updates for some reason -How serious a security flaw is that ?!
XP with 1GB Ram is faster than Vista with 2GB ...maybe even 3GB
Every single application you try and run has to be 'passed ' for security
To get around this you can not install programs into default locations .
PC Is very often unusable when Vista 'administrative 'tasks are being undertaken ....
    etc etc etc ....

This thread is starting to go way off topic, and into another vista V. xp thread. The OP's original question has been answered.
