Some rambling thoughts from an online grinder

Well was trying to think of something for my 3000th post and had a few suggestions.... one suggestion was to post all my bad beats with AA... but I didn't want to crash the boards server!!!

So instead I'll post a little longwinded version of my last 18 months and my thoughts on how the game has changed and how to cope with it...

Not exactly by choice but I spent the last 18 months or so playing online poker as my sole source of income. I was kind of thrown in the deepend and tbh I was a winning player live but knowing what I know now ..I really don't know how. I started my online play on tribecca with a br of 2 k and managed to get it to 4 k with a pretty good run playing 100 and 200 nl... setting myself a goal of withdrawing 500 dollars a week for "wages" I set off on my online journey... I managed easily at first but with the falling dollar I soon found that 500 wasn't enough and had to increase this to 650 to live..

I moved to ipoker with a better loyalty programme and set myself goals of moving to 400 nl nearly every month but by the time I withdrew each month/week I never really had enough to move up and every time I would reach 10 k br I'd give it another shot and end up something like this

    munl0.jpg
    w1002.png

anyway when i first started playing online it was the old tribecca and we didn't really realise how good we had it. I could successfully play a 40/25 game and beat 200nl back then

with the move to ipoker and the lack of US tallent the game changed considerably... It has become more and more agro and more and more regs sitting waiting on rakeback and bonuses. there are a number of decent regs on there too and I think to beat these you have to think outside the box a bit....

playing a standard 22/18 game agains these guys doesn't seem to work and I found my self in high varaince wars on a regular basis 3/4/5 betting preflop and getting it in with all sorts of stuff against them..

my thoughts on some "outside" the box thinking against these regs...

The floater... with c-betting now the norm a lot of regs call the c bet with the intention of betting if checked to them on the turn. therefore making the second barrell a necessary weapon of choice.. problem I had with this is that the 2nd barrell often committed you to the hand if you got raised on the turn.. so to combat this I often raise a little less preflop 3bb's rather than 3.5 and c bet the flop for 4bb's and then fire the turn for 11 bb's leaving me pleanty of room for play with a 100 bb stack an I could fold the turn to a raise without a strong hand or fire a third barrell... I found this really necessary against regs and a huge ammount of them fold the turn here making it quite a profitable move when varied with normal play...

Facing the aggro preflop reg ( they love 3/4/5 betting)

3 betting became the norm from even the nittiest of regs. even an epidemic at times!! so 4 betting had to become the norm with a wider range than normal again being careful that if I did have a bag of spanners that I hadn't committed myself with my 4 bet... and to follow from there when they 4 bet your 3 bets you had to be prepared to 5 bet all in with a wider range too increasing variance a lot.... So again thinking outside the box a bit I found a way of combating these guys was to min raise preflop in late postition and when they are ready to 3 bet they dont know what to do then.... If they fold will and good and if they 3 bet they often only 3 bet to 7 bb's letting me call in position and play the hand in position with plenty of play left in the hand... or I can 4 bet much smaller again leaving play in the hand with 100bb's.... some others will still 3 bet to their normal ammount of maybe 26/27b's making an easy fold...

anyway enough mad thinking theory.... as a matter of interest anyone like/dislike it? just some rambling thoughts of a grinder..

anyway where would my 3000th post be without some strange hands.....

here are a few of my favs... these guys are blessed with the art of Physic poker..... they know it's coming!!!

    gheykg0.jpg
    w535.png

gotta love when the shortie 94%er calls your raise and then decides to ship the flop.... :/

    lolwg2.jpg
    w845.png

    Ship the flop obv!!!
    lol2ym5.jpg
    w839.png

Physic poker IMO... ship the flop because you know you'll turn and river quads!!

    lol3gr2.jpg
    w847.png

Ok enough of that.... I'll crash the server!! but i could go on all day ;)

Anyway it's my 3000th post so I can do as I like!!

Let me take this opportunity to thank a few people on here....
big help was HJ for his coaching normally at times of need!
Roadsweeper for listening to me on msn....
DVD fan for some excellent opposition.....
Theresa for some spew :) helping me through bad times.....
CS/RT/Fuzz/IanMc and others for excellent hand reviews and helping me understand this stupid game....
Excellent mods on here for thier valued time to keep our forum in order.
Thanks to all boardsies in general for the daily entertainment
The regs of the SE for some fun times and affording me a decent standard of living ;)
The regs of the Jackpot for breaking me on a regular basis... again with Physic abilities !!
I miss Lukes and the Merrion!!

    I hate beats
    I hate AA
    I hate trolls

Anyway for now thankfully I'm back in the land of enterprise with my new venture www.failtehotels.ie and www.ebookireland.com which I'm delighted to be a part of. It's an interesting new chalenge for me and gives me the opportunity to take some more shots and enjoy poker again without the grind and pressure of having to make a living from it...

    Rant over!!!
