How to reduce movie size?

I used Magic dvd ripper to get my movies onto the harddrive. However, I got an advent 4211 as a backup laptop and also as a travel device so I was wondering how can I shrink the movie file size a little bit while keeping decent quality. I'd like to get 15-20 movies onto the 4211 for when I go travelling in a few months.

Hope this is in the right forum.

    Cheers.

you could use winzip, to compress the files or 7zip.just expand them to view them.or buy a cheap 2.5 external derive.

Not sure if I can post this so Mods please remove if it offends, dvdshrink is what you are looking for or if you want to go the DivX route then easyDivX is an ok tool.

You can get movies down in the 300-500 MB range and keep very good quality using h.264 encoding.

MeGUI is the best tool for free h.264 / x.264 encoding.

Here is a guide which begins at installation of MeGUI and other required software through to converting a DVD.

Make sure when you get to the autoencode stage that you select the .mkv container instead of the default .mp4 container.

Then use XP codec pack (media player classic + codecs) to play the encoded file.

if you want I could write you up a very simple, plain english and short guide if you want. There's nothing to it really.

I've posted this link so many times I think it should be stickied!!

    Super Converter
    www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Convert anything to anything, and you can control the compression rate (i.e reduce the video size and quality. Generally fast enough too.)

    i used dvd shrink

    remove all the menu's
take away aubtitles and 5.1 ch sound unless you want it

reduce movie to around 65-80 depending on what you want and still very decent quaility at around 3gb or less p/movie
