Scrap or not

Decisions, Decisions. My brother has a 1985 Opel Kaddette, 2 door, 1.3. Its been sitting in a shed for the last 7 or 8 years, and the intention has been to restore it, but with time constraints that never happened and never will. Now the space is needed, so what to do with the car, rust has set in, rear arches sills and near side inner wing. Mechanically its good and complete and all the panels are good and he even has some spares. Its an orgional Irish reg too,

Question is, is it worth trying to sell this car for resto or even parts, or is there a market, I mean its 1985 and I have only ever seen a few on the vintage circut. Other alternative is scrap it, but its leaving either way, hard to know what to do, any suggestions

I think I'd ebay it. There will be someone for it but probably as long as it's free or very close to it.

I'd say sell it. Be careful though who buys it, especially scangers, who may use it to joyride around the place.

well, the wings and drivers door are in the boot and after lying up for about 8 years, im sure the brake callipers could do with some attention, got it running last week though. Main question is there a market for it, is there much interest in old opels.

Yes,it is fairly new,i would try to find a home for it if at all possible,it would be a pity to see it scrapped.Could you post a few pics so we could see what shape its in,is it an old irish reg?

Annoyingly enough, the car is still here and its still in the way.

    OpelKadetteinyard.jpg

The door is back on and all the parts are inside it. Needs two rear arches, two sills and a bit or front inner wing work.

Parts are there, in it, and the log book too. It'll drive up onto a transporter or what ever.

Its FREE, first come first serve at this stage, but.......IT MUST GO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! as in the next few days, not after christmas or anything like that.

Any takers PM me, It would be nice to see someone get some use out of it, instead of scrapping it.

i'd have it off ya just to save it but ya too far from me and i have no transport.if there's not alot of them around it be worth saving.can't you move to mallow:)

    good man manta mad,

i am a complete eejiit, my wife would/will leave if i am to bring another stray dog(car) about the house.
have had to refuse a few cars this year.

Even if you dont fix it, you ve prevented it becoming a cube on the back of a lorry.

Happy days! Wouldn't have minded taking it myself, although the lack of space is a problem for me.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Fair play, manta mad!

Despite what I sometimes say about fairly common, mediocre or otherwise not very special and certainly not outstanding cars from the past, I'm the first to acknowledge that what is a classic is very much a personal thing

And for me that Kadett is a bit special. The Kadett D (the 1.3S that my parents bought new in '82) was the first car I drove seriously (as in more than a couple of yards in a deserted car park like I did in their '78 Ascona B 1.9N to practice gear shifting)

Surely there are only a few of these around now and it would be sad never to see one again. You saving one will make a difference!

I was never much of a fan of that type Kadett - but it was a lot better looking than its successor. It just goes to show that there is a customer for every car out there.

I may have to 'dispose' of a few cars cheaply in the new year as now that I have the merc plans I had for my 16V Fiat coupe and Peugeot 205 gti have been scrapped and they will be among the cars that will have to go.

Great to see this Kadett saved!
I grew up near an Opel dealership in the 80's and recall lots of Kadett D's about the place back then....haven't seen one 'in the flesh' in a while.

I always had a fondness for the Kadett D SR (and GTE) versions especially the SR in yellow with black arches!

There was an '83 reg black GTE at Terenure show this year ...pics were posted here IIRC.

BTW, Mantamad ...has she an original Irish registration??

Those type if Kadett's with the round headlight were the base models, weren't they? I think the higher spec. models had the square headlights.

    Silvera,

Love your pic of the 3 SR's. I bought one in '88. It was originally
a prod saloon racer, then used for night navigation rallies by a
scrapman from wexford. I tracked him down and he still had the
rollcage hanging up in his shed. I worked on that car non stop,
engine rebuild and major body job , and have great memories of
it and still a few scars !!
I bought one during the summer and despite posting it for sale on
Totalopel have been doing a few bits and pieces over the last few
nights and its like going back in time !! Except it drives better
than My old one ever did !!

Btw the black GTE is also for sale on TotalOpel,I posted it up
for a lad I work with- Its rather nice !

I had a 1980 1.3, 310 HZJ , great car, far better than the dog of a Kadett E, I replaced it with, so bad I swapped it for a Fiat Uno:D

Lovely car there Dave, the MK1 GTEs are scarce now,is she an import?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭welder

Thanks for the kind words Carchaeologist, Its my 1980 kadett 1.3 SR ,its not
too bad but has been off the road since 1990 so has a few dints and scratches but no major rot,and runs great. It is an import I'm afraid, would
love to have found an orig irish one, pref. in white or yellow, but they all seem
to have disappeared. Not a fan of the brown but think it would be a shame to change the colour when its so original.
My mates GTE is also an import, heres a pic or two of it to whet your appetite ! They are both for sale on Totalopel if anyone is interested.

    Love that interior,looks tidy!
Yes,you should keep your brown paint IMO,no sense in changing colour just for the sake of it.What sort of pennies have you the brown one up for?
