Bass problem

My three or so month old Fender Precision has some annoying after noise on some frets, basically some buzzing or vibration that stops me from creating a clean sound. I'm sure this is the kind of small problem that experienced bassists can solve with ease, but I'm a relative beginner, rather stupid and I haven't read enough on how to set up my bass properly so any advice would be great. ;)

Secondly, any chance of someone recommending to me a good place to get my bass properly set up in the East Cork/Cork City area?

How low is the string action?

Is the neck straight, or is there a slight curve?

Could be a lot of things, I'm sorry I can't sugest a tech, but someone will be along soon who can.

You could always have a mess around with the action as Darkstrike said.. Get an allen key and raise/lower the strings at the bridge. If you play hard, best have the action a little higher. I have it as low as possible without any fret buzz so it's easier to play.
If messing with the action doesn't solve it it could be something to do with the truss rod (that'd be the curve in the neck), but just mess around with action first. Loosen the strings a bit before you do, just to be sure :)

Here's another guide, if you don't have that stew-mac tool thingy-

Thanks for the advice everyone. The vibration is coming from the 7 fret to the bottom, and is most prononouced on the E string, if that helps. I have messed around with the truss rod and adjusting the saddles etc but its only lead to incremental improvement.

Anyway, I think I'm best off giving it to a professional to sort it out - any suggestions? Again, living in East Cork, can get it to the City if necessary.

Not often that happens !! :D:p

To the OP : My advice is to follow the instructions as they are given in the link. "Messing" with the truss rod ect, when you are not sure what you are doing is pointless.

Looking for a pro to do the work (as you are now doing ) is the next best advice.

Dear god someone please suggest a trustworthy pro in Cork County/City whom I can send my bass to before the ****ing thing ends up the trash can. Its pissing me off no end.

BTW, when one plays a note(for me usually a 7th/8th fret on the 'E' string), and then the tension rises to a deafening noise, is that problem with the bass, amp or both?

I have no idea if these are up to date but here's some I found off www.drop-d.ie directory..

    Nixon Guitars+Amp Repair
U12 Thompson Hse, McCurtain St., Cork City - 021 4551644

    Jeffers Music Co.
    10 St Patricks Quay, Cork City - 021 4558600 (http://www.jeffersmusic.ie/)

    Russells Music Cork
    27 Parnell place, Cork City- (021) 4273912

I don't know anything about any of them but you could give them a call or check their webbys and see if they'll set up your bass.

Thanks yevveh. I dropped Jeffers an e-mail, although I don't see anything about basses on their site.

Anyone have experience with that shop before?
