Problem with 98 Ford Focus speedometer

hi there, the speedometer in my focus (1.4 hatchback - 1998) cuts out regularly. It works fine, then the needle goes to zero and then after a about 30 seconds or more, it comes back on. is this a common fault in the model? if so - will i have to get the dash replaced? what's the damage if i do?

I have heard of this problem before on the MkI Focus. Your best bet is to google a Ford or Focus specific forum and ask for advice there.
