If youve any interest in the birth and development of hiphop this song may interest you. It pretty much charts the whole beginning of the music...

Fumbling over words that rhyme by Edan

    Lyrics
    [Hook]
Fumbling over words that rhyme [x4]

    [Verse 1]
Mad rap user, game made under pressure
Expose the jewel teeth, school at my leisure
Fumble over words that rhyme with a verse divine
I backtrack and think of the greatest of all-time
Class is in session, master this lesson
Teacher was a student, studied like a Buddhist
But few went on to be the best ever to do it
    So let's do this

    [Drum Break]

    Nothin' to it
Considered the first emcee to blow the spot and do work
    - was Coke La Rock spittin' for Kool Herc
Followin' the influence of 'Hercoliod parties'
Brothas like Cowboy made you move your body
Cowboy would toast for the G and Flash
skills elevated as crews started to clash
Flash and Bam, they both saw clientele
So Flash formed the Four with the father Mellie Mel
Four became Five, more became live
Routines on the breaks, crew kings motivate
After L the brothers became the Five Fantastic
With Theodore they battled the Cold Crush Four
Few had the confidence of G. MC
Without the CCB's [Cold Crush Brothers] there'd be no Run-DMC
The Funky and the Fearless Four forced emcees to small Spoonie G
And I can't forget the Treacherous Three MC's

    [Hook]

    [Verse 2]

Props to the Kool Moe Dee, he elevated
and changed the r-records like the new rap language
Before the first full length LP's
There was abstract brothas like the one from LZ
Run DMC broke through in '83 - outta Queens,
started rapping hard over drum machines
808's started shakin' up floors ["The World is Yours" Sample] ITS YOURS
We takin' rock's complex metaphors ["T La Rock" Sample]
    T.L.A.R.O.C.K.
    A primary influence on L.L. Cool J
    T La Rock's futurism must've been respectable
'Cuz Tragedy from Queens was young but very technical
Sham was eloquent, Kris was intelligent
The 'R' was all of the above - with added elements
Slick Rick the Ruler was a street-made producer
Ultramagnetic had the vision for the future
Big Daddy Kane getting raw at The Appolo and
Kool G Rap was probably the sickest of all of them
Jaz from the BK, Mercy and Finesse from the BX
Prince Paul and Pharoeh came next
    Wu with the G-Z-A, C-F-K
N-A-S one of the best out to date...
Any MC that's added on to the list
Pump your fist, but first give praise to the true scientists

Its twice as good live, he cuts the beat using two samples on the turntables, basically cutting the beat live there and then and rhyming over it at the same time. Takes ridiculously good timing... heres an example if you want to see it...

Probably the most criminally underrated artist in music I know of.

Edan is a hero. His 2 albums so far are perfect, there are no flaws. His live shows are amazing, although him and Dagha seem to be doing the same set for a while now....but i'd still pay to go back and see the same gig again and probably again after that. There is so much happening that it's difficult to absorb everything.

His cutting and his introduction of instruments and props is amazing, the way each song is pieced into the next, there is no lull in the show...just all action! The back and forths that he does are insane...alot of credit has to go to Dagha too for keeping pace and timing.

Pen - I'm not sure about the underrated comment though, his last gig in the Olympia had a huge crowd, probably more than the likes of Atmosphere, El-P, Immortal Tech.....even Ghostface would bring in (in Dublin).

Just to re-iterate, Edan is a hero.

I only have the Beauty and the Beat album, its savage though - Rock and Roll ft. Dagha - amazing, Promised Land, Beauty, the track with Mr.Lif that I cant remember the title too, all unreal.

I called him underrated because a lot of people dont appreiciate just how creative he is, the albums - although SHOCKINGLY great dont even get near doing the live act justice, I believe he does all his own production aswell, that more than being a rapper or performer, thats artistry. The use of WHA-pedals on the mic, the live guitar, the interaction between himself and either Dagha or Insight (which ever hes touring with at the time) is jawdropping then he gets up and does the cuttin'-and-rhymin'... pfft... best live act I've ever witnessed ever ever in the whole wide world, I was like a five year old child leaving the gig when I saw him the first time, pure giddy. Maybe not underrated but underapreciated by the majority of 'hiphop' fans...

I still cant see him getting a bigger crowd of Atmosphere though if they recieved the same promo... Although I wasnt at Atmos (I was away)... he got around the same size crowd as El-P (I was at both first gigs... they were pretty similar)
