Price of scrap metal and classics

It's well known that the price of scrap metal (and therefore the scrap value of cars) has gone up a lot recently. However I didn't realise just how much scrap prices had gone up. According to the page below the price of "gross shredded auto scrap" has increased by nearly 500% in 5 years.

    http://scrapmetalpricesandauctions.com/iron-steel/historical-steel-price-index-american-metal-market-amm/

Cars that are bangers now and are potential future classics may suffer from this - some cars that would have gotten laid up before will now get weighed in instead. Also, abandoned cars in ditches around the country that have sat there for years are now being pulled out and scrapped as it is now worth doing. What does anyone think?

one was a very clean opel kadett 2dr 5 speed with only 70.000 miles
the other was a mk 2 golf ocean 5door hatch again clean .

scrap lorry was seen going up .
but no one took any notice ,till later & seen broken glass & no cars :(

if the price is good for scrap cars ,

I've been noticing alot of 'nearly-there' classics that were left in driveways of houses have disappeared recently (mainly a Nissan Cherry N12 and an early 80's Mazda 323, both were sitting in driveways of houses for years in Templeouge until recently).

I guess it's also the reason why I can't find K10 Micra's in scrapyards anymore, they go straight to the recycling plant for a small profit to the owner.

I got a guy to take away my wifes Saab 900 classic, it was a shame but I had come under pressure to get rid of it.
This was only last week mind you!

Jaysus, I hope my Micra doesn't 'disappear' one day. It's near the road gate on my uncle's farm, although I doubt they'd get very far as it has no engine!

jebus!! I have a couple of beetle shells out front of my dad's garage that to a scrap lorry would look like dollar signs but are worth a lot more than scrap value to me... better get them hidden...

saying that, we did let off an '86 volvo and '82 passat to the scrap lorry for free recently.

No, it's grey. I'm on the lookout for a driver's door myself, as the current one is in bad shape (scumbags breaking into it have made shíte of the door)
