Hi folks, played Glenmill golf course in Wicklow yesterday. Its a fine par 3 course with some holes over 200 yards. Can anyone tell me if handicaps apply to par 3 golf? For example if your an 18 handicaper, would you get a shot a hole on Glenmill for purposing of calculating your stableford score? New to the game you can probably tell!

handicaps would apply no matter what par3 course u are playing..... provided its a par 3 handicap ur tlking about and not a regular golf handicap your trying to use on a par 3.If u were say for instance a 14 handicap, well then u would only have a shot on the holes from index 1 to 14.

Just a short note to see if there are many people playing par 3 golf?? I play myself (not very well) with a society based in nrth county Dub. I only joined up this year as it is great way to play every Sunday and still have time to spend with the family too! which doesnt happen when I play long golf cause it takes up most of the day. with the par3 I am back home by midday.

If anyone else might be interested? drop me a line for more details.

A group of us play par three on sunday mornings around Wexico for the same reason Big Al has mentioned. Most are golfers who play regularly on the long courses but are limited by family commitments on Sundays. We have a very casual society. We use 3/4 of our long course handicaps as a starting point. You are cut for stableford scores above 36 and get back for less than 32.

Thanks Al, well I was talking about a regular golf handicap! So basically to get a Par 3 handicap you would hand in three score cards and it would be worked out? If someone has a handicap of 18 for regular golf is there a way of converting it to par 3? The other poster mentioned taking three quarters of the handicap? How scientific is this?!

We base the 3/4 system on the fact that on a par 3 its 54 shots for an even par round. Most 'long' courses are par 71/72. 54 is 3/4 of 72! As I said, we have a very casual society and no one gets hung up on the odd shot. It started this way because most of us had GUI or other society handicaps and it was the quickest way to get the ball rolling.

if you play off 18 on long golf then the bad news is you will be playing off scratch on par 3. i know this cause one of the guys who plays with us regulary is playing off scratch cause he plays off 18 on the long golf.

Thanks Big Al, would the same follow then that if you had a long 36 handicap youd get a shot a hole on Par 3? Or if you had a 27 handicap on long golf youd get a shot on the most difficult 9 holes on Par 3???
