    Hi Everybody,

I just wanted to check and see if anybody out there is currently using the diaphram/cap as a method of contraception? Due to family history I have decided to come off the pill after almost eight years and would like to use a hormone free method.

Can anybody advise me on this? I know there is a contraception thread over in The Ladies Lounge but it isn't that specific.

    Thanks!

I don't know too much about them except that they're very uncommon these days. I think they have quite a high failure rate compared to other forms of contraception. One study found them to have a failure rate of about 10%, but other studies have found failure rates of up to 30%. They also don't provide that much protection against STDs, compared to condoms.

Condoms are probably your best bet for a barrier method.

With perfect use in conjunction with spermacide the % is estimated at 6%.
Using in conjunction with condoms it may be possible to get that even lower.
