mtb spd shoes

I have a pair of the cheaper ones you linked and they're fine. I use them for spins on a hybrid though and not mtbiking on trails. They're comfortable and let the air in at your feet which is nice on long spins. When wet they will let water in at your feet though. They aren't waterproof or water repellent.

Easy to walk in too, obviously not all day but grand for getting off the bike and walking a bit to enjoy the scenery. You don't go on your ear either or have to walk like john wayne when you stop off at a spar shop for a drink.

Be carefull of anything with laces though. Got a pair similar to the first one and they were great for a while 'till the laces got ripped in the chain and now they can't be closed properly. The ones I got had better ankle support which was the reason I got them so the laces may have been up higher nearer the chain.

Be careful with the shimano shoes. Mine were way to small, others on here found the same problem, and on other forums it is also mentioned.

If you are buying online you might want to try on a pair of shimanos in a shop beforehand, or just get the next size up.

I was able to return them to CRC with only a small restocking fee, which is very fair since they have "free" postage.

Yeah, forgot to mention sizes. Get a size bigger than you normally get. I wouldn't worry about the laces on this shoe though. Once you lace it up and tie it just send the loop back through the tongue. Stays put and doesn't interfere with the chain.

Like I said the only problem with this shoe would be in the wet or on really cold days but tbh if it's pissing rain your gonna get wet anyway. Otherwise it's comfortable and works really well for ventilation and keeps your foot cool on long spins.

My personal choice would be the ones with the velcro straps as you can then loosen/tighten them on the move should you need to. That is probably less of a concern if you are using them for commuting, but if you were spending hours off-road then you might find more of a need to adjust them during the course of your ride.

I have the older models of this:

    and this:

I love them both. I use the bottom for touring and for when I'll be walking a lot. The rigid sole on the top one is brilliant for when I'm doing shorter spins and I know I won't be walking much.

My pedals are Egg Beaters and need shoes with good support.

thanks for the advice on the size. could prove a mess if i ordered the wrong size, Trojan - sounds like you are my best option on advice as you own a pair of both of what im after. which of the two would you recommend for a 2 to 3 hour spin which doesnt involve much walking? only planning on heading out once a week.,

Top one definitely for that use. They're ok for brief walking, 5-10 minutes, but not more.

Whatever you get, make sure you get a good fit. For me, I got the same size as normal and that suits me, I don't think one size bigger would suit me at all. Anyway for shoes I don't recommend buying off the web, personally I think going to the shop and trying them on is worth paying an extra 10 or even 20 euros.
