There is currently no unanimously agreed upon definition for the term

    :p

The term is way too vague. Someone who plays Wii sports all day every day for their whole life could be considered hardcore. Actually I'd say that type of dedication is a lot more hardcore than someone sitting on their ass playing CSS.

Anyway, I guess what you're getting at is that Nintendo are marketing most of their games at multiplayer audiences rather than 1 player ones.

The Wii has always been marketed as a party/pick up and play with your mates type of console. It's not in the same league as the 360 and ps3 in this regard. If you want that kind of experience, then stick with one of the other two.

Personally I think it compliments a 360 or ps3 very well. You do need at least one of them to go along with a Wii. But the opposite is true, if you only have a ps3 or 360 you're missing out too.

I guess the problem is, and some would argue if it is a problem at all, that they have released new gen updates to all their big IPs already, instead of spacing them out across the consoles lifetime, so, in the 1st 2 years of the Wiis existence we haved Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Zelda TP, WarioWare, MarioKart, seeing as Rare and their massive output on the N64 are no longer in play on Nintedo home hardware, it leaves the release schedule rather bare.
But then we can look forward to an update of Pikmin, Animal Crossing, more Zelda and Mario, not to mention some great releases on the VC, such as Super Mario RPG for the Snes, not released here. Also the WiiWare has Lost Winds and more to come,

Given also that the PS3 and 360 schedules are mainly filled with sequels and EA yearly updates, I reckon we are all in the same boat, most developers playing it safe with easily made titles with as broad an appeal as possible, be it minigames, pet raising titles or racing games and space marines.

I think the loss of Rare has been a huge factor. During the N64 era, they (in my opinion) made some the best games. Goldeneye and Banjo Kazooie blew me away. I was so disappointed when MS bought them, PDZ was the game that pushed me to buy a 360.

Of course, the quality of Rare's work seems to have dropped. Their magic touch has all but dissappeared, although Viva Pinata is great. I hope the new Banjo Kazooie revives my faith in them, it looks beautiful.

Sorry if this seems a bit off-topic, but it's how I feel! The Wii still has some amazing titles, SMG being the most obvious. And VC gives us the chance to download the great titles of yesteryear!

There's also a lot of really amazing Wii games that people have over looked. Fire emblem is an absolutely amazing strategy RPG but nobody has really bought it. Also No More Heroes and boom blox amoungst others get neglected. Even sports games work out that little bit better on the wii. My brother tells me Pro Evo is wonderful and much better than any footie gmae he has ever played and I'm currently loving tiger woods and would pick the Wii version over the PS3 and 360 version.

Have you got Sin & Punishment or Gunstar Heroes from the VC?
Can't really call yourself a hardcore gamer unless you own a bunch of treasure games imo:p
I agree though, the Wii is definitely just catering for noobs at the moment.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find that only 1 out of every 10 Penny Arcade cartoons is actually funny?

I disagree with you totally, I find the ratio to be much lower than that. However sometimes they really hit the nail on the head with a classic.
