How could I forget that goal of Jimmy Quinns, on the volley! Nearly broke the hearts of millions. I think Billy Bingham was manager of Norn Iron at the time, riling up the crowd. :mad:Remember the match well.

I started my first job, it was luxury to be earning proper money for the first time in my life doing the job I'd just spent 3 years training for and working for nothing.
I was thinking of buying a house near Dublin that cost £40000, but didn't bother as I thought it was too expensive!

I qualified as a nurse, which was nice, and left my adopted home of Sligo to return to Dublin.
I do remember the Sligo nightclubs of the time, Toffs, Xanadus, playing the worst selection of weak dance you can imagine, all 2Unlimited and Dr. Alban!

Had a great 21st that year too, all my work friends down to TDs pub and got very very drunk, hmmmm.......

I was in 2nd Arts. Went into town one day and bought a Nintendo Gameboy. It led to my missing a few lectures because I was fuppin' addicted to Tetris :D

According to Wikipedia, these were the top 10 grossing fillums of the year

    1. Jurassic Park
    2. Mrs. Doubtfire
    3. The Fugitive
    4. Schindler's List
    5. The Firm
    6. Indecent Proposal
    7. Cliffhanger
    8. Sleepless in Seattle
    9. Philadelphia
    10. The Pelican Brief

Being an arts student, I think I went to see most of these during daylight hours in the cinema.

    Also in 1993....
    • Jamie Bolger was murdered by two ten year old kids
    • Monica Seles got stabbed in the back by a Steffi Graf fan who had a screw or two loose in his head
    • People bought Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time', read about 15 pages, then stuck it back on a bookshelf. Permanently
    • Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk won the Nobel Peace Prize
    • Meat Loaf's I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) spent 7 weeks at No. 1 in the UK
    • Mr Blobby beat Take That to the coveted Christmas No. 1 position:P

Oh that brings back the memories. What a strike. One of the Best/most important Irish soccer goal of the 1990's, IMO.

In 1993, I was in third class in school. I can also remember my mother being made redundant, which probably wasn't a good thing about that year....

'93, I was in 3rd clas and went into 4th in the September. My fathers corolla was stolen that year. Also went to Landsdowne foir the first time, God must have been there a couple of hundred times since.
And it was the year of the Grand National that never was

Well 1993 was a very eventful year in my life:

I gave birth to my daughter in May 1993

I did my leaving Cert in June 1993

City Square Shopping Centre opened up in Waterford in 1993

Ace of Base's song "All that she wants" was no. 1 the week I had my daughter.

Whitney Houtson was No. 1 with "Always love you" for weeks upon weeks in 93.

Songs I rem from 93 are Mr. Vain, The Key The Secret, Meatloaf's I would do anything for love, 2 unlimited.

    Will be back for more!

1993 we went on a geography field trip to Clare. At the time there was a row going on about the building of an interpretive centre for the Burren at Mullaghmore (it never got built). Our class were all standing around looking at something or other that was of some interest to the lecturer if not to us when this farmer appeared out of nowhere and started shouting at us to get off his land. Seems the local landowners were refusing to have have tourists and/or geography students go onto their land because of the row.

Around that time too, Sophie in Home and Away had a baby called Tamara. The father was played by Guy Pearce who's gone on to better things.

    !
:DI laughed at that, because the line is "All that she wants is another baby"! Were you thinking that at the time, or was one baby enough for you?

Thats dead on, I rem the baby kept roaring & then died of a cot death, not the best thing to watch when you are 17 & pregnant :(

Kelle all my mates took the pee out of me because of that song :D, even though I didn't want another baby I was thrilled with the gorgeous little bundle I had :) Same little bundle is a stunning 15 yr old girl who drives me mad & makes me smile in equal doses!

Other stuff I rem from 93 was that you could get Secret bars which were very plentiful in my local shop.

Also a IR£2 coin would get you a hell lot more than a €2 coin would now.

Disney land paris had just opened up & I had to miss the chance of a hol there as I would've had to go without my daughter & just couldn't leave her..

Raves were big & I went to see the Prodigy in sept 93 in Waterford :pac:

LOL - oh wow, the memories! Well it was half my life ago - cannot believe it's 15 years... it kinda feels relatively recent.

I remember the 70s made quite a comeback in '93 - there was a bunch of Sister Sledge reissues in the charts, Whitney Houston released a version of Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman, Rozalla (remember her? "Everybody's FREEEEEEEEEE to feel good") did a cover of I Love Music (whoever that was by) which featured on the soundtrack of one of the best films ever, Carlito's Way.

There was a fair bit of 70s gear in fashion also - I bought the most fabulous flares, as well as platforms and a black velvet choker.

Madonna was going through her Sex phase - that book was out at the end of '92.

Some great female artists were coming to prominence - like Bjork (who released her debut solo album that year, entitled... Debut), PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, the three of which featured on an iconic cover of The Face. There was a "movement" in indie known as "riot grrrl" - feisty female orientated rock groups. A total music press invention but some great bands like Babes in Toyland, Hole, L7...
