Anyone ever just up and left

I recently went through the most fun and also the most upsetting experiences of my life and I just want to get out of my current situation.

I'm 23 in my second try at college (going into 3rd year). My parents, who I live with, are currently going through a nasty divorce which neither of them can afford and I'm stuck in the middle of it. I just had the best weekend of my life where I let go of nearly all my inhibitions and laughed more than I ever have (no drugs involved) and I came out the end facing back into another year of a course which I like but not to the extent that I know it's defo my bag. Living with a house in constant upset and a brainless retail job.

during the week I quit my job and found out about deferring my course. I want to just get out and live for the first time since I left school 6 years ago. I've no idea where to go or where to start but I'd like to make a shot at it. I was thinking of moving to Norway or switzerland where I have relatives or friends. These places would be great because they're in the EEA which means I dont need a work permit.

I'm fairly sure I want to do this but i'm not sure if it's possible to just do it... Anyone ever had this urge and done it??? Was it good bad? did it work or not?

    Thanks

Yes yes yes! Excellent idea. Your're young, you'll never have this time back again, you'll regret it if you don't (having being so close to doing it) and sure things can really only get better.

I think you have to do crazy things to scare yourself into living to your full potential. It's too easy to get stuck in a rut. I randomly moved abroad a few years ago at the drop of a hat, and it paid off, well for a while at least. A very enjoyable experience altogether.

And Switzerland is cool if you like cheese, chocolate and lots of rules.

What was so great about last weekend?

They're not, as the OP said, they're in the EEA.

OP, go for it if you feel there's nothing much worth hanging around for here.

I've done it a bunch of times. I'm 24 and still a year away from a BA, so I suppose I've wasted a lot of time but I've learned a ton and wouldn't change any of my choices. Honestly it's so enriching to just do what you want to do; to know that it's possible and that there's nothing holding you back from anything. Do it before you have responsibilities like a spouse and kids and a mortgage.

are you sure about the work permit in switzerland? some friend of mine went over there a few summers ago and i dont think they could get work legally. of course maybe they were just stupid.

    Do it!

I finished my course and just had to get away. Parents are doing the whole divorce thing so home life hasn't been exactly great over the past 5 years or so.

I was only meant to be away for a year but it's 18 months now and I'm still here! It's nice to be free from all the hassle and being caught in the middle.

    Don't hesitate, just do it!!!

I've never done it but was close to it a few years ago and then i was hit by a surprise pregnancy. DCon't get me wrong I would never change my life for a minute but sometimes I wish I had have 'lived' more. I was only 20 and all of a sudden life became all adult on me;)

Go for it, you will regret it one day, if you jnow that you can come back and complete your course then go and enjoy yourself. So many places, England, Scotland, Spain France anywhere just be young and free and have some time to laugh!

Wish I'd had someone giving me all that advice in my 20s, go for it. I didn't and boy do I regret it now. But do it because it's right for you not because everyone else says it is.

Did it a year ago as an experiment and though I miss Barry's and decent cheese it's been amazing.

Now have changed career, getting married, buying a house and we're getting around to seeing most of Europe to boot- it's hard work but rewarding. Good luck!!

Congratulations FunkDork! This will be an opportunity of a lifetime. I'm planning on heading away to NY next year too and I'm only 21. If there's nothing holding you back, go for it. As everyone else says, this is the time to go away and enjoy your life as much as possible before any responsibility starts to hold you back.

    Have fun! :)

what's the worst that can happen? The worst that can happen is that it takes you a couple of years to catch up to where you would have been if you didn't go to Oslo.

    BUT!

I bet that something happens during the time you spend away, that will shape your life. It's worth risking a couple of years to find out what that is, I reckon.
