A friend of mine has two war of independence medal, that belonged to his garndad. One is silver the other bronze. He had a gold one but it was nicked afew years back. Im just wondering if there is any way he can get a replacement one, or can one be restruck if he provides name, rank, number etc?

I think a medal can be re-issued in the UK but unsure if its the same here?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi chem,
are you refering to IRISH war of Independence medals??
I have never heard of a gold or silver version. The 50th anniversary commemoration medal of 1971 had a gold-like colour, but as far as I am aware, all the of original (both standard and 'comrac' versions) medals were bronze.

Give the Dept of Defence a buzz. They replaced my late father's medals that had gone missing. They were very nice and helpful on the phone too.

(Like danpatjoe I too have never heard of a silver or gold version.)

Irish War of Independence medals will not be replaced by the Department of Defence, as thye attract a very high value if resold. There are currently a few replicas for sale on eBay.

There are no such things as silver and gold versions. They are all made from bronze.

May be different if you can prove that you're next of kin.

No, it isn't. A NoK is as likely as the next man to sell it on. What they will do is issue a certificate.

Well that's a decision if made that I would most definitely appeal to the relevant minister about. There are some things, and people, that cannot be bought.
