USB recognition problems WinXP

I've tried to connect two different USB devices to my laptop in the last few days - a USB flash drive and 3 mobile's E169G broadband dongle - and on both occassions the OS has tried to find drivers, failed and said the data was invalid.

With the BB dongle I actually had the drivers and pointed the add hardware wizard in its direction when trying to set it up, but it seems to have simply missed it.

I was quite surprised with the flash drive not working as that would be a straight-forward piece of kit, but it seems to be having the same problem.

The OS I'm using is XP SP2 and the laptop is a Dell Vostro 1000, which has 4 USB ports (Two on the back, two on the side) and none work.

Other USB devices - such as an external HDD, USB printer, USB speakers, mobile phone connections etc. all work fine.

    Thanks

there are many drivers out there that require you to install the driver BEFORE connecting the device.

True enough, although the Three modem's drivers are only available on the device - there's no disc with it and the manual tells you to just plug it in and follow the automatic process from there.

As for the USB key, there weren't any drivers with that because it's a basic device - certainly not something you'd think would require a lot of set up.

While I'm not comparing like with like, both devices worked as you'd expect when used on a Vista laptop (the 3 modem prompted me to start the setup, I installed the software from the device and it all worked once that was done while the USB key just worked as you'd expect and as my external HDD works when I plug that into any laptop).
