    Hi All,

    So far the list is:

LA: nothing so far, can anybody recommend anything, Im sure theirs loads just havent looked into it yet !

SanDiego - Tijuana (just to say weve been to Mexico!), any other recommendations?

Las Vegas - Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Cirque de Sole

San Fran - Alcatraz, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Golden Gate Bridge.

Whats the story with accomadation, would we have to book acc. before we go for all the cities? We'll book the first 2 nights in LA but then I dont know...
    Thanks...

hey, Im just back from a 3 week trip. flew into vegas, then drove to death valley, San Diego, L.A and finished off in San Fran, with stops along the way from each city obviously. Best experience of my life. Death valley was amazing. I was in Vegas twice before this trip and love Vegas. Its my fav spot on the planet. Did'nt like San Diego, but loved Tijuana! That place rocks.
L.A was surreal. great fun and stayed there for 5 nights.

I'll recommend one activity for each city:

Las Vegas(Grand Canyon)...death valley would need 2/3 days for get a basic idea of the magnitude of the place.

    San Diego(go to mexico :)

L.A(Universal Studio's)....loads other stuff to do but this will take a day.

San Fran (alcatraz)....the tour to the island itself is fully booked out untill end of October so you won't actually get to go on the island itself, but there are loads of trips that bring you around the island on a ferry and has a fully narrated guide. Not the real thing but better than nothing.

Personally, I loved Death Valley. We spent 3 days there and the heat was unimaginable there in early August 53 degrees. I love the heat but it was so unbearable that you cou'dnt stay out in it for long.

Vegas is well...just brill! I'm a big poker fan and therefore its a paradise, but even if you never went into the casinos to play you'll still have a great time there. It really is a fab place to visit and does exactly what it says on the tin...adult playground!! :)
The show's are unbeliveable and you should def go to one. Last year I went to a magicans show where miss pamela anderson was his assistent. It was spectacular and so was the show!

Accomodation is rotten cheap in Vegas for obvious reasons. The three times I've stayed in Vegas, Ive stayed in the Plaza hotel(downtown), which is ten mins away from the strip by car/bus. your looking at about $30 per room per night there and the rooms sleep 4.

In all the other cities you have to shop around to get accomodation if your on a budget. YOu can great clean accom for around the $70 mark which was for a double bed for myself and the girlfriend. In L.A though you really have to look to get somewhere under the &100 per night fee. We stayed in Burbank which is 10 mins away from Hollywood and we got a lovely travel lodge for $85 per night...which was super.

All in all, the experience of a californian road trip combined with driving all around the place (with Sat nav of course) was one of the best trips of my life. The scenery driving through the desert is out of this world and would be hard to beat imo.

I travelled very light and did most of my washing as we went along. It was the first time I travelled light as usually I'd bring a heap of clothes. But I'm off to Tanzania for 3 months in Jan volunteering so I wanted to experience the whole "very little clothes" concept before I left for that.

Hope this little bit of info helps you plan your journey. Are you driving? Its the easiest thing in the world over there, provided you have a sat nav. I was very nervous with the idea of driving on the other side of the road, as I'd never drove outside of Ireland, but it's so easy that it makes driving around Ireland seem like a joke when compared.

If you need any more info jus PM me.

    Happy planning!
    Carlo

Just back from a similar trip (LA-Grand Canyon-Vegas-Yosemite-San Fran) I think you are trying to cram too much in to that trip. You have Lake Tahoe and Yosemite down as to do's for San Fran, but Yosemite is a good 4 hour drive from SF, I;m not sure about Tahoe, but think it is quite a distance as well. You could do them in a day trip, but you would be all day on the road and you'd be wrecked. Certainly Yosemite deserves more than a flying visit. You need to give yourself time to just enjoy the cities.

Are you planning to drive non-stop from Vegas to SF or where you planning to stop in Taho and Yosemite for a night on the way? Vegas-SF is a 12 hour drive. If you are planning to stay in Tahoe or Yosemite, you would need to book accomodation asap, accomodation in the parks books up months in advance.

As for LA, we were there for two days/3 nights. We had done the theme parks in Orlando so we skipped them. We spent the first day doing the Hollywood/Beverly Hills sights and then the second day we went to Santa Monica beach (where Baywatch was filmed so I believe!)

Vegas, you could just pass your time strolling up and down the strip, popping in and out of casinos. I would book accomodation before you go in order to get the best price. Use a discount code, you will get them on the websites www.fatwallet.com and www.smartervegas.com I would also book the Cirque Du Soleil show now if you haven't already done so.

San Fran, it's a nice city just to walk round and chill out, it has a very mellow vibe. The must see's there for me were the Golden Gate Bridge, Fishermans Wharf and Alcatraz.
