Now I was just looking at that post about Anthony Ellis and I thought I'd make one about someone truly great in the bodybuilding world.

His name is Vince Gironda and he is worth looking up.

    http://www.ironguru.com/Home/tabid/637/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/266/Classic-Vince-Gironda.aspx

He was a bodybuilder and a bodybuilding trainer whose ideas on training and nutrition were far ahead of traditional ideas at the time. He was a proponent of aesthetics over pure size and of course the all natural way!!

So take a look for him, I gaurentee you'll find something you can use! :)

God i love the old photos of the guys from back then - they look fantastic and much better role models than the bodybuilders of today.

Shows you how good you can look with hard training and a good diet.

His philosophy that bodybuilding is 85% nutrition. He never used steriods, his main supplements were EGGS and liver tablets. Loads and loads of them!

Meh... he had a good chest and decent conditioning but times have moved on. Just cos he was ahead of his time 30-40 years ago doesn't mean he's offering something that modern day theories don't....

I'm not saying that times havent moved on, but some of the modern principles are based on his ideas. Maybe take a read before judging. So you have a better body than his?:D

I'm not saying what he teaches is gospel. I'm just saying you can take something from it.

At 21/22, I may not have a better body, I like to think I've done ok for myself . I certainly think I have better legs. Right now I'm more concerned with just getting as big and strong as possible so I've bulked up quite a bit from that pic (prolly 10kg heavier, with lots more to come, split 50/50 between muscle and fat I'd guess).

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with what he's saying, but what's the point in referencing 30 year old information when it's been studied in further detail and improved upon since then...?

I know he's like you're god. I think you've mentioned him in 90% of your posts so far :D

I think hanley most trainees have NOT learned from the past very well as the bodybuilders with their programs from flex magazine, bodybuilding.com etc make realistic gains from natural trainees seem so small and keep people seeking out the new, special, secret program thats going to get you big, strong, ripped and do your feckin dishes as well!!

Its good to look back on the greats prior to the use of drugs as they can show natural trainees like you and my good self what can realistically be achieved with hard training and consistency.

Finally, i am impressed with him but feel i could easily hold myself up to him or most drug free trainee in terms of physique because i have learned from the past NOT in spite of it.

p.s. hanley your 10kg heavier!!! Puts my 5kg since last pic to shame

See that's what the most crucial point is in my opinion. By today's standards, he's merely another above average guy who works out. He shouldn't be held up as some pinnacle of drug free development...

I'd say you've stayed a lot leaner than I did tho.

The first pic was around 89-90kg I think, maybe a little heavier. I got up to 103kg around April and came back to mid 90's for my comp in July. I'm probably 98ish kg at the moment tho I haven't weighed myself since the comp really.

If all goes to plan I'll be heading up to around 105 or 106kg at the start of Feb. and coming back down to (hopefully) a more solid 100kg for the national PL champs in March/April.

Totally agree, there are drug free guys on mens health that look better but still impressive back at a time when doing weights was considered deviant
