Had anyone the misfortune to watch Ryan Confidential tonight? He was 'interviewing' Marco Pierre White. White was awarded three Michelin stars when he was in his early 30s, Ryan asked him:

"What did it feel like when you got the three stars - I mean, is it the biggest horn of your life?"

I might have laughed if it came from Podge and Rodge, but from a man in his fifties with five kids?

And then when White was talking about his failed marriages Ryan, predictably, turns the conversation around to his own marriage breakdown and talks about it. I'm sure his wife and children appreciated that.

I'm never going to whinge about Pat Kenny again, next to this bloke he's a God. Ryan is truly vile.

Aren't Podge and Rodge considered over 50....difference is they're just puppets!

Ryan has always been outspoken and don't see what was wrong with what he said especially since it was around 10:30 at night!!

its interviewing a man about his business getting some of the highest accolades known, then tryin to sound cool by using slang. immature really.

I'm not looking at this from a Mary Whitehouse point of view, it was just one of the great cringeworthy TV moments of this or any time.

Actually, Marco Pierre White is an even more vile figure than Ryan, I almost felt sorry for him when White ordered him fish in batter and mushy peas, evidently unimpressed by Ryan having shovelled fine cuisine down his gob and gasping (while the food dribbled out of his mouth) "fan-tas-tic". Gerry just didn't get the fact that White was taking the p1ss out of him, in an unpleasantly sneering way.

To be honest, Ryan is not cool. There is no reason to use the phrase "horn" when asking that question. It's unprofessional to say the least. I agree that Marco is an insufferable man but Ryan could at least have made better use of the interview. As for his discussion of his marital breakdown on National TV, well that's just wrong. He should have enough respect for the privacy of his wife and children to keep his mouth shut and for once in his life, not talk about himself...

I've recorded it and am looking forward to watching it tonight.

Out of the whole episode, if the 'horn' question is the only thing that bothers you then 'meh'. As for 'predictably' turning the conversation to his marraige breakdown and the effect on his kids, I believe he's been very discrete about the whole affair on the radio thus far so I certainly wouldn't mind him refering to it occasionally.

What were you expecting ? Gerry unpeeling the multiple layers of his guest with his provocative and searching questions, or just another episode of car-crash TV where Gerry and his guests discuss bodily functions ?

I don't see what is so surprising here. Ryan has been from day 1 on Radio and TV a
complete tool and never lets up on the smut and vulgarity and bad language. He really is the pits and an embarrassment to broadcasting. I'm no prude, but Ryan's conversations are gutter and belong in pubs. He's a joke and Kenny, though far from awesome, is a cut above in every way!

RTÉ Radio and Television presenter Gerry Ryan has announced that he and his wife Morah are to separate after 26 years of marriage.

In a statement issued through James Hickey of Matheson Ormsby Prentice Solicitors the couple asked for privacy at this time and said they would not be making any further comment on the matter.

The statement read: "It is with regret that Gerry and Morah Ryan announce their separation after 26 years of marriage. They remain dedicated to their five children and ask that for the sake of the family the media give them privacy at this time.

"The couple will make no further comment and ask that their and their children's privacy be respected."

I suppose it's ok to talk about it as long as Gerry can make a few quid out of it tho.

Can't watch or listen to the man. He was cutting edge back in 1988 - twenty years on, I find him a bit pathetic.

    But...to each their own!

i heard him a couple of times during the week throwing all his toys out of the pram because his tv 'show' was not mentioned in the launch of the RTE winter
    programming.

Last nights shambles just kept reminding me of the Apres Match sketch of him
    and Brain Kerr

Its time that one of RTE's biggest hogs had his overfed head taken out of the licence fee trough.

I don't think Marco was taking the piss, he's probably the most likely of all the famous chefs to do so. Sure he uses ketchup and worchester sauce in loads of his dishes which tend to draw inspiration from his working class background. He's big on traditional English food.

    Cult confidential

Those who live by the c-word die by the c-word. Gerry Ryan seems proud that Gordon Ramsay, the notoriously foul-mouthed celebrity chef, was so affronted by the RTE broadcaster’s profanity that he terminated their television interview.

A bleeped-out clip of Ryan screaming “c***” at Ramsay is serving as a heavy-rotation promo for the new series of Ryan Confidential.

In reality, however, the outburst simply demonstrates why Ryan will never attain the mainstream TV success he craves.

It proves that he is, and always has been, a cult.

he just does a bizarre thing and interviews end, his fault

Ryan like most RTÉ presenters is terrible, but he's not content with being one of that pack of terrible presenters, he goes out of his way to make sure he's the worst of the worst.

He tries at times to provide shock value, but the only shock is how in the name of god he's still on tv, earning absurb sums of money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭tintin67

Although Jonathan Ross is vastly superior to Ryan in every conceivable way, they have one similarity - they have both turned into slobbering sex-obsessed middle-aged men with their tongues constantly hanging out. Not a very edifying spectacle.
It baffles why RTE keeps giving Ryan work on tv as every show he has presented in the last 20 years has been a total flop.
As for a 50+ year-old guy who is paid God knows how much by the taxpayer roaring 'C**T' in the middle of an interview he is conducting on the state broadcaster, regardless of what time it is broadcast, that is just sad, not 'cool'. I hope the production crew were as embarrassed as most of the viewers, though probably not.

And wasn't 'School around the corner' a success too?
He can be a pain in the ar*e like Kenny too but we will all still be watching the late late next week and at some stage listen/watch Ryan.
It amazes me that the same people post the same sh*te over and over again be it Ray Darcy, Pat Kenny or Gerry Ryan yet they still watch and listen to them repeatedly. Why?

I disagree. Ross used to be a bit better, but he's now just as sh*t as Gerry Ryan. The only difference is that Ross gets decent guests on his show. He certainly can't interview someone to save his life. He never seems to do any research on his guests, which is something you can give Ryan some credit for.

In fairness I don't think many tune into Ross for searing in depth interviews of his guests. I'd say as many tune in to watch Ross himself as they do anyone he has on.

OK, I'd give you 'School Around The Corner' as a relative success though it would be hard for even Ryan to ruin a tried and tested format like that. Sadly he never got a chance to roar C**T at any of the kiddies or discuss his wife's menstrual cycle with them as it went out at 6.30 of an evening.

    The fat,dribbling slob.
When he did his little shouty "****" bit..ramsey looked for a second as if he wanted to punch him, then gave an embarresed sort of laugh and asked him had had his blood pressure checked recently.
If this was Ryan trying to appear edgy or something it badly rebounded on him and in fairness, should've been cut from the show.
But i mean c'mon..is there nobody else in this country capable of doing an interview with celebs apart from Ryan? Are we going to have to watch his engorged, bloated face and wet, rubbery lips slobbering away forever?
Take this sweating bucket of lard and his "I" complex and give him the elbow.
    Edit
There's some interesting graffiti round ballymun way concerning our Mr Ryan..obviously i wont go into the content but it makes interesting reading.

I was listening to Ryan plugging his show and in particular this interview with Ramsey one morning last June on his radio show as I drove to work.

He described Ramsey on the day of the interview as being an obnoxious self-indulgent man, who had a foul mouth. Our intrepid interviewer decided to give the celebrity chef a taste of his own medicine, and as we saw in the edited footage, called him a C**T. In his description on his radio show that day, Ryan said Ramsey was totally shocked by the Dubliner's outburst, and struggled to get his next words out......"You cursed at me in my house..."

As far as I can remember from Ryan's account of the interview, he said Ramsey then "childishly" refused to go any further with the interview. With only a few minutes of material recorded, it was looking like this was going to be a wasted trip for the RTE team....until someone had the bright idea to call Marco, explain to him what had happened with Ramsey, and would he be interested in trying to get one over his "rival".

The way GR described it last June it sounded like Ramsey had been a complete ar$e, and I was really looking fwd to seeing the episode the other night to see how bad an ar$e he actually was. After watching the toe-curlingly embarrasing 40 minutes last week, it was very clear to me who the ar$e was.....and he isn't a chef.

Jesus Christ. Are you for real? Just because you don't like him, doesn't mean everyone else who watches the show doesn't like him. It's that simple. That's why it's been going on for 4 years, that's why he's been fronting a very successful radio show for 20 years, now.

Well I watched it. Wasn't impressed. I don't know who dresses Ryan but he looked desperate.

Anyway, it certainly looked to me like the Ramsey interview was discontinued after his embarassing outburst, a great pity as the Ramsey interview was better material than the Marco White circle jerk that was going on in the restaurant. Not great TV at all.

I find it objectionable in a country of 5 million people that the only person they can find to front a programme like this is him.A man who has no charm or talent apart from self-indulgence and self-promotion.
A man with no table manners guzzling and gulping, chomping and slobbering on television.
A man who has no interest whatever in his guests but is more interested in how he can show himself to best effect, asking puerile and embarrasing questions in an attempt to sound trendy.
The man doesnt have the face for television much less the talent to sustain such a show.He is out-charismad by every one of his guest, most of whom are thoroughly unpleasant people in thier own right.
    The fat,slobbering,ju-ju-lipped bucket of lard.
