Just wondering does anyone know what the story is with bringing a laptop over to America when going on holidays?! Do they check your harddrive or download the contents of it or have the right to do so or anything?!!

If your passport has the same name as you use for posting here, I think they would certainly want to have a look at your hard drive.

haha, god that was so funny my sides actually hurt from laughing, however i don't use an internet username for my passport.

They don't check regularily, but yes they do have the right if they have any suspicions about it's contents etc.

Also, please keep to the charter. If you have a problem with a post, report it. Don't respond on thread :)

Actually, can you not plead the 5th and not allow them to look at your laptop?

iirc slashdot had a story not too long ago about a judge ruling that they cant search your laptop?

Been to the US many times with my laptop(s)

Not once has any US official looked at it. They would be at it all day . I even got stopped by customs once and they went through everything but didn't glance at my laptop

You occasionally get the ' security ' people as you check in ask you to power it on , but I think it's just a power trip

( By ' Security ' people , I mean the guys at the check in that check your passport/travel details and try to be official usually employed by a security firm and they put a little sticker on your passport, I just find them rather silly to be honest but I contain my laughter and answer the questions. )

It is mostly the US airlines that employ them.
