Has anyone ever had a dress made for them?
How would you compare it to buying? Is more expensive?

I had a dress made and it works out a lot more expensive.I had to buy the material and i wanted little beads so had to buy them, then pay for to be made obviously.
It can take a while to be made as well and fittings you can be going back and forth, it would be cheaper to buy a dress but if its a special occasion it probably is worth it as you get the exact dress you want.

    research obviously..
Never had a dress made, but if it was a very special occasion i would definately.
i would assume it would be more expensive though.
Had a look at your dresses fashion freak. loved the bridesmaids ones.
how much did they cost roughly?

Just started dressmaking a while back and am slowly teaching my self dress design and making unique custom dresses.
I'm curious to know what people would spend on a dress if they bought it in a shop or if they have had it made was expensive and was it worth it.

Thanks femmy, they were for my sisters wedding, I made them as a present to her, they were some of the first dresses I ever made.
I think the fabric cost about 70 per dress and the work would be about 120 again per dress.

I got 2 dresses made lately and they are the first dresses that I have had that fitted me properly. I seem to be a size bigger on top [ 14 skirt and 16 top] so buying proper fitting dresses off the peg can be a problem. I actually saw a dressmaker advertisement on Gumtree. I gave her the material that I bought for €80 and the patterns which cost me around €15. We sat down togeather and discussed the design etc and she made some valuable suggestions as to length, neckline, sleeve style etc. A few days into the project she contacted me as to ideas she had about the lining and adding an underskirt of tulle to give the dresses fullness. By this time she had my complete trust so I told her to proceed as she thought best. The end result,--=for another €200 ,I have two absolutely georgous dresses, that fit just perfectly and are unique. June

I've had a few dresses made, well the main one was a corset top and skirt, but as the dressmaker was a friend it prob cost a lot less than to actually go to a tailor...but at the same time quite possibly cheaper than buying. It depends on the occassion how much it's gonna be really, grad dresses cost anywhere from €200 to €600 whereas you could probably get one made for about €150 i think...again, depends on the ocassion and material and tailor etc...
and even though it was made specifically for me and it was nice I still didn't like it as much as a dress I picked up the day before the grad for €90 on sale...
If you're an odd shape of size I'd def recommend getting one made, my boobs and hips made it difficult for me to get a style of dress that actually was nice on me...

pic is the back of the one I had made, not got a decent pic of the front but it's quite plain and simple
