Playstation 3 Chess Game

Given that the PS3 has processing power comparable to IBM's Deep Blue chess super computer, why has no one bothered to create a PS3 chess game that utilizes the cell processor. I'm sure lots of people would love to have a go against the program that beat Gary Kasparov or even Deep Fritz running on the cell processor.

Because Sony was talking out of their swiss. It's not the super computer they were saying it was. You can get PCs on the market which massively out perform the PS3.

In fairness generally the type of person who buys a console isn't the type who wants to play chess.

Ooh yeah, I hope to have a new PC this week!

x86 is not a workhorse, its poorly designed and its only advantage is legacy. Without microsoft it would have been replaced by processors with a much more efficient architecture like Cell or the IBM Power7 4GHz. Now can anyone who actually knows anything about processor architecture tell me why no one has created a PS3 chess game yet? The answer about the average PS3 owner not being interested in chess is probably the best so far.

A full price game definitely wouldn't sell, but I can't see the harm of them releasing something like that on the PSN... Then again, that would mean they would have to actually release something new on the PSN!

I meant workhorse in the fact that it can do quite a lot. Cell is good at a few things, and out classed in a lot of other areas.
X86 isn't the greatest design per se, but the extra instruction sets, and the bejaysus being tweaked out of it from it's legacy standing have stood it in good stead.
Microsoft could have moved it they felt the need, afterall, there stuff currently runs on more than x86.
Anywho, sorry for dragging it off topic.

Chess on the PS3, it won't happen unless it's very cheap, or there is mad renaissance in the area, eg. poker.

The simple answer is profit , there is no money in chess games , mainly because there are a multitude of chess games available for free , coming in all types , from fantasy characters like LOTR , to Sci fi characters like star wars etc , they are also in 3D , some come with pre programmed classic masters games and so on , the market is completely saturated , there is nothing new to do and any developer making a chess game these days would struggle to get it noticed never mind make money off it.

Besides , even if the game could be programmed with the AI to equal a grand master like Kasparov , all that would mean would be that you'd have a game that only a handful of people in the world could hope to win.
A sure fire recipe for an instant flop !

I think people would only buy such a game in to order to re-affirm how poor they are at chess.

It would be great training. Every time you play, your opponent would be the equivalent of the world chess champion.

so you've just re-defined the target audience from 'people who'd like to play chess' to 'people who'd like to think they can take on a world champion'.

    Yeah - that'll sell...

I bet theres more of them than you think. Alot of people want to buy the latest version of chess software instead of using an old version because they think it will be better/more of a challenge.

You seem to think that the entire world should say 'right lads that's enough, we should never make chess software any smarter, it makes us look stupid'.

Not quite what you are looking for, but you will be able to play chess in Home when its released.

Don't think it will be playing against the PS3 though, just other PSN/Home users.

What would be the point? A 286 PC could beat the majority of casual chess players. As the others have said, there's no market (even for the causal chess players) on a console like the PS3.

I wonder if you can put a chess game on Linux for the ps3?
Haven't done this, but maybe its worth ago for someone who used Linux.

Ha, that's classic! I was reading through this thinking 'very lively debate here!' and then I saw the last post date!

Seems cheap, chess is good mental training, I might buy it!
