First of all, thank God I found somewhere I can actually read about viruses without my virus redirecting me to some bloody dating site!!!

Ok, maybe you guys can help me, maybe not. Please try-it'll be sincerely appreciated. I have tried the "I think I have a virus" sticky but it appears my clever virus prevents all those linked sites with the various tools from loading at all! (I'm using Firefox). I have up to date commercial anti-virus software which I will never pay for again-it scans, finds a virus called bugnraw something and tellls me it's been deleted and my computer is healthy-it is not!

I began experiencing misbehaviour a few days ago, random reboots with a blue screen, Hotmail live won't load at all, google searches about viruses/microsoft support etc. all redirect to sh!tty websites. I would like to meet the @rseholes who write these viruses and punch them into next week but sadly that isn't going to happen.

So, given that I can't get any of the sites to load from the above mentioned thread, what way should I proceed?

Can you transfer them over via a USB key and run them ? Or try rename then and run them then

    If not, try this

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
      • Tools->Options->Main tab
      • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

      CF_download_FF.gif

      CF_download_rename.gif

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
    8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    9. Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

    Thanks for your interest ASJ.
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
-No go, page cannot be displayed messages for both those sites. Am I now left having to get a USB key and finding a clean PC to download the sticky thread tools?

Man, I am raging. I set up a an old Linux box about 4 years ago and it has a firewall in it and sits between my windows machine and the net and thusfar I have never had anything get through (that I noticed!) but now I'm feeling the full effects of malware and the frustration level is unreal.

So, gotta get a USB key and report back here when I have all the tools on it?

Quick update....having read other threads and seeing that safari has been immune to some malware I downloaded it and it's allowing me access the tools in the sticky. Working through the sticky. Will report any problems. Thanks again ASJ!

Is there a message when it blue screens. Antivirus 2009,which is similar to Antivirus XP 08, creates what appears to be a blue screen. The msg states that antivirus 2009 has found a virus...etc.
This can be removed with malwarebytes.

No message vis-a-vis viruses etc. Just a message asking for any recently installed hardware/software to be removed.

I hadn't installed either and I went to do a system restore only to find no restore points existed! That's when I became convinced I had malware.

Ok, so I plodded through the sticky and indeed spyware and trojans were detected and erased but I am puzzled by my last step, the online panda scanner, because when it had completed it asked me to subscribe to their product in order to disinfect. However, the logfile of this operation suggests these items have been disinfected:

Also, It told me my Computer Associates (CA) anti-virus is not enabled, but it says it is and all up to date?

The strange behaviour has ceased and I'm seriously greatful for this forum!!! Best thing on boards, but I have a niggling doubt there's something left, unless panda software are not being entirely honest and want you to buy their stuff??

I'm installing all the updates this morning.

    Do this
    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

    Got a nasty rootkit

Don't pot the logs in quotes

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

        * Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
        http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

        * To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

        SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

        * SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

        Make Internet Explorer more secure
        • Click Start > Run
        • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
        • Click on the Security tab
        • Click Reset all zones to default level
        • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
        • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
        • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

*ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.

*Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

        * MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

        * Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
        Here

        * Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
        Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

        Thanks ASJ,
Hmmmm, I have a new problem-the Windows Installer could not be found error when I tried to install any of the updates above. It's not in safe mode. Any ideas?
