D string keeps breaking

I should start by saying that I'm a beginner guitar player. That is, I've been playing for about a month. Now, my problem is that my D string is broken. But whenever I replace it, it breaks when I'm tuning it. I can't say I'm sure that my stringing is perfect, though. All (four) times I've attempted to string it, I have first winded the string once around the peg, then put it through the peg, then started turning the machine head.

But as stated above, the string ALWAYS breaks when I'm tuning it. More specifically when I'm about to tune it past the A string's open tone. Also, all four string have broken at the guitar head. I'm getting really sick of this, and it's really putting me off.

I play a Epiphone Les Paul Special II and I use D'addario super light (.009) strings.

What strings are you using? Same brand and set each time?

Is the string breaking at the nut, or at the tuner/machine head?

I edited the post just after you posted. The first time I used Ernie ball super slinky, and after that I've been using D'addario super light.

It breaks just where the fretboard ends, close to the head.

It sounds like it's catching in the nut. Get some very fine sandpaper (the gray stuff is usually ok) and tear off a bit. Wrap it around the offending string, or a piece of that string and run it through that slot a few times. Don't do it forcefully though. It should get rid of any sharp edges. You can rub some pencil graphite in the slot to help the string move through easier afterwards.

Make sure you stretch the strings before you put them on.

A little pencil lead in the grooves of the nut should act as a lubricant and prevent the string from breaking!
