Look at the sticky thread at the top of this forum for some suggestions. If you want to get an idea of the really big names from the past, then Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy is a good starting point, but it doesn't cover the last 40 years or traditions outside the West.

Three general introductions that I like are by Simon Blackburn: these are Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy, Truth: A Guide for the Perplexed and Being Good: A Short Introduction to Ethics (all published by Oxford University Press). These will give you a flavour of the main issues and point you towards further reading. If you can still get hold of them, the series of books under the general title A Very Short Introduction, published by OUP some years ago, will have titles in the areas that interest you. Go here for a list.
