Hypothetically speaking if there was another world war, that had not already ended by nuclear strikes. Would you sign up if your country asked you to? Or join the forces of another country, such as some of our grandfathers did in WW2. My grandfather joined the Royal Irish Regiment in the British Army during WW2 and fought in France, thank god he survived or i would not be here today.

If the extent of the war had an affect on me (i.e. it was a choice between fighting and living in an underground shelter for a few years), if it was a fight I believed in, and not some nationalistic bull**** the government/media/propaganda forced down my throat, and if I felt that, as a soldier, my contribution (and life) was appreciated and that I wasn't merely cannon fodder.

    Then, I would consider fighting.

Otherwise, you can kiss my hippy ass.

No way in hell. The Irish army would have about 3 members, we're all "conscientious objectors"

And I've stopped a plot to destory the world by Russian Ultranationalists in COD 4 but lets be honest you're not getting off the ground and I am probaly going to shoot myself in the foot if a war comes our way.

Well it depends. If Ireland went to war then it would depend on why we're doing it, more likely than not i wouldn't.

If Ireland was invaded for no good reason then i probably would.

In the end it may not be up to you anyway. In the event of total world war it would be conscription, the other option being death.

I for one woule like to welcome our new Anhglican.... ah, you get the idea!

Generally speaking, no, I wouldn't. Nationality is a very thin concpet at the best of times and not worth getting killed over. If my personal freedom was threatened, then yes.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I had to make that choice (at least on a theoratical level) in the late eighties (cold war, remember) when faced with the question do I do my national service in the army or in a hospital.

For all sorts of reasons I chose the army ...one of them was yes, I'd be prepared to defend my country and what it stands for.

Having been in the army, having had the training and having my head filled with all the simplistic patriotic (idiotic) bullcrap the army feeds you, my answer to the question is ...absolutely, definetly not.

The only force I could see myself joining would be a resistance kind of operation.

    I know, I know!

But it really comes down to how you define "the greater good"! I have a funny feeling it's going to vary. I wouldn't fight for a 'nationality' or a 'flag' because that's not as important to me as individuality.

    Imagine there's no countries

Nothing to kill or die for

probably if war actually broke out because we were actually being threatended like in the world wars, not some stupid war like iraq.

but it goes without saying i would have to be made general straight away so i could order all the above people who said "yes" to their deaths.

    general is a great position.
if you lose a battle and every dies you can just say in a very sincere voice "meh...it war people are going to die"

however if you win you can say "you know that was my idea"

    /rant over.

I would have no probs going to war as a despatch rider. I have this baby over 20 years. :Dhttps://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/101066/56595.jpg

It's a wonder how war exists the way everyone says they'd never go to war. Maybe first thing enters their minds when they hear that is being sent off to fight somewhere rather than to defend Ireland against unwarranted aggression.

Would it really just be a case of uprooting themselves and just leaving Ireland to whoever wants it in their hypothetical empire?

When there were so few Irish to sell unhealthy products that it looked like wage levels and hence the cost of these unhealthy products would rise, the Chinese came here to continue to serve us booze in nightclubs, KFC chicken, mackers food and, the greasiest dish known to man, late night Abra meals in order to make us too unfit to fight when WWIII kicks off (or take part in future Olympics)

Id join. The enemy bullet would never kill me, seeing as I would have died of heart failure at the training camp.

We should have a Boards war.

    Sim:

The over fancied Military board was overrun by the Beer Guts and Receding Hairlines board. The board followed up that victory by forming an unstoppalbe alliance with the Zombie board.

The After Hours board is much like Russia during the Napoleonic and World Wars: A large army with incompetent tactics that can only use it's capacity to absorb massive casualty rates to stall the enemy and hope to win through attrition.

The Thunderdome board manged to rape and pillage the Weather board but infighting led to mutinies.

If someone threatened here or especially if they invaded here? Yes I would. While I would certainly agree with Johnson when he commented, "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel", hiding behind your mothers skirts in the face of oppression of values contrary to the common good of those you claim as your fellows, or worse, those you don't naturally claim as your fellows is a far worse thing. Though as the past has often shown resistance movements swell their members after the fact when history has proven them right.

Plus if yore ma was "doing her duty" when hiding me between her sheets in times of escape all the better..... :D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Public opinion is very easily swayed. Look at how quickly attitudes to drink driving and smoking were changed. Whoever controls the media controls the masses.

Good post. When I was younger I would have said yes, certainly. As I got older I realised that war was an abberation. A most disgusting act carried out by humans, and that wars are futile. OP, do you think your Grandfather or anyone else who fought in WWI were right to do so? Sorry, but they were pawns in a clash of colonial superpowers. The elites sent millions into industrialised killing fields and sacrificed them readily. At the conclusion of the war what was achieved?

I recommend reading War of the World by Niall Ferguson, or one of Anthony Beevors books (Berlin or Stalingrad in particular) to get a real feel for war and the human suffering that is dished out to the innocent bystanders most frequently. Even more disgusting is a war for oil which the US and Britain are now engaged in.
